Sergio Perez: "Esteban Ocon vervangt een van de beste coureurs van de grid"

Sergio Perez krijgt volgend jaar voor het eerst in drie jaar een nieuwe teamgenoot aan zijn zijde. De Mexicaan krijgt Esteban Ocon naast zich in de garage bij Force India, ter vervanging van de naar Renault vertrokken Nico Hülkenberg. Volgens Perez is Hülkenberg een van de beste coureurs van de grid, maar Perez schat Ocon daarom zeker niet minder in.

Ocon maakte eerder dit jaar zijn debuut bij Manor Racing en heeft slechts negen races ervaring. Ocon kent het team van Force India echter al wel, nadat hij al eens getest heeft voor de Brits-Indiase formatie. Ocon heeft een overeenkomst voor meerdere jaren getekend bij de renstal uit Silverstone.

Perez heeft enkele mooie woorden over voor zijn voormalig teamgenoot Nico Hülkenberg, die in totaal vijf jaar bij Force India actief was: "Ik vind Nico Hülkenberg een van de beste coureurs van de grid. Het was erg lastig hem te verslaan in de afgelopen jaren. Ondanks dat zaten we nooit ver elkaar af en zorgden we er samen voor dat we het team naar een hoger niveau konden brengen. Ik heb veel van Hülkenberg geleerd, ik weet niet hoeveel hij van mij heeft geleerd."

Force India eindigde afgelopen seizoen als vierde in het kampioenschap en legt de lat voor komend seizoen weer wat hoger. Een niet-ervaren rijder kan dan een nadeel zijn, maar Perez denkt dat Ocon snel gewend zal zijn: "Ik heb veel goede dingen gehoord over Esteban Ocon, maar we moeten afwachten hoe snel hij echt is en hoe snel hij gewend is aan de nieuwe reglementen. Op dat vlak begint iedereen komend jaar op nul. Het team heeft gekozen voor de best beschikbare coureur en we zijn blij hem aan boord te hebben voor komend seizoen en de jaren daarna. Hopelijk kunnen we het team volgend jaar samen veel punten bezorgen."

OCO is overgewaardeerd. Nieuw in het team met een PER die zelfs door VES lastig in te halen is en meer ervaring heeft wint OCO niet snel van. Denk dat het in ieder geval 1 jaar 2e viool spelen wordt voor hem.

Ocon zelf verwacht binnen no time op hetzelfde niveau te zitten als Perez dus het zal een beste clash gaan worden tussen die twee.
Enige verschil is alleen dat Perez zijn plek in het team al verworven heeft en na het McLaren debacle geenzins van plan is om nog iets tussen hem en zijn verdere carrière te laten komen. Dat wil dus zeggen dat het voor Perez erop of eronder is. Veel mensen staan daar niet bij stil of gaan daar makkelijk aan voorbij maar als Perez gekopt wordt door Ocon is zijn hoop op een terugkeer naar een topteam definitief vervlogen. Ik verwacht en hoop dan ook dat Perez scherper en sneller dan ooit zal zijn en zelfs de vieze spelletjes niet zal schuwen om Ocon eronder te houden.

Ik kijk erg uit naar dit duel binnen Force India in 2017.

Is Perez zo goed als veel denken dat hij is, of blijkt Ocon een supertalent a la Max te zijn, of blijkt hij nog veel te moeten leren?

  Perez is zo goed als ie was in 2016.... daar blijft het bij, Ocon is zeker zo goed maar zeker niet van het " rubber" waar Max uit gesneden is

  Ocon werd de meeste weekenden in de F3 om zijn oren gereden door Verstappen. De enige reden dat Ocon de titel won is doordat Ocon geen materiaalpech kende. Verstappen zonder materiaalpech had 5 overwinningen meer gehaald dat seizoen.
  
  Daar komt ook nog bij dat Ocon bij het oppermachtige Prema team zat.
  
  Ocon is wel consistent. Ik denk dat hij daar wel in uitblinkt, maar echt iets speciaals heb ik hem nooit zien doen. In de GP3 heeft hij ook alleen de eerste race gewonnen en daarna niks meer.

  En toch heeft Prema veel meer middelen dan de overige teams.
  Dat is ook waarom Prema sinds 2011 ieder jaar het rijders en het team kampioenschap wint.
  
  Wil je nog een beter voorbeeld?
  
  Rosenqvist reed 4 jaar voor Mucke en werd ieder jaar door een rijder bij Prema verslagen. Daarna reed Rosenqvist zelf bij Prema en was hij ineens compleet dominant.
  
  En als je denkt dat dit alleen komt omdat 2015 al een zwak veld had, bedenk dat even dat Giovinazzi in 2014 in zijn rookie jaar het een stuk beter deed dan de ervaren Rosenqvist. In 2015 maakte Giovinazzi echter ineens geen kans meer tegenover een Rosenqvist bij Prema.
  
  Zo zijn er nog tal van voorbeelden.
  
  Ondanks dat het chassis hetzelfde is zit er een enorm verschil tussen de teams. Dat is overigens niet alleen in de F3. Dat zie je ook in de GP2, GP3 en F4.
