Sergio Perez: "Ik ben bezig aan een sterk seizoen"

Force India-coureur Sergio Perez is over het algemeen zeer te spreken over zijn seizoen tot nu toe. De Mexicaan scoorde geen punten in Monaco en Bakoe, twee circuits waar hij vorig jaar nog op het podium eindigde, maar dat neemt niet weg dat hij prima resultaten heeft laten noteren. Perez bezet momenteel de zevende plek in het kampioenschap, met 44 punten.

Daarmee heeft hij maar één punt minder dan Max Verstappen. Perez: "Ik steek goed in mijn vel en behaal goede resultaten. Ik ben echt bezig aan een sterk seizoen. Afgezien van Azerbeidzjan heb ik elk weekend het maximaal haalbare uit de auto gehaald. Maar ik geloof niet dat ik heel veel beter ben dan vorig jaar, toen ik ook al een goed seizoen draaide."

Over zijn rivaliteit met teamgenoot Esteban Ocon zegt hij: "Het heeft me niet verbaasd dat hij zo goed is, want we weten allemaal wat hij in de opstapklasses heeft laten zien en dat hij Verstappen heeft verslagen in de Formule 3. Esteban is snel, getalenteerd en gelijk op tempo. Force India heeft de juiste beslissing genomen door hem aan te trekken."

Perez en Ocon zijn echter wel in een felle onderlinge strijd verwikkeld. "De teamleider is de coureur die de meeste punten scoort voor zijn team, en degene die de betere resultaten behaalt. Tot nu toe gaat dat goed. De voorgaande jaren ging dat ook goed met Nico Hülkenberg. Maar het seizoen is nog lang, dus wie weet", aldus de Mexicaan.

@Dutch F1; inderdaad, dat was zwak. En dan kan Vettel op nieuwere en snellere banden staan, als ik zie dat Checo bereid was zijn teammaat er af te rijden stond dit wel in schril contrast met hoe makkelijk hij het Vettel maakte.

Je was vorig jaar beter Sergio.
Monaco en China dit jaar waren gewoon stomme fouten imo.
Ben benieuwd wat er gebeurt als Ocon echt gaat aandringen bij onze Mexicaanse vrind.

Canada was wel een mindere race van je, of had de manier waarop Vettel je kon inhalen (kinderlijk eenvoudig) te maken met een eventueel contract bij Ferrari.

  Hij verdedigde aan de buitenkant van de bocht, en een rondje eerder op dezelfde plek verdedigde hij aan de binnenkant van de bocht om zijn teamgenoot te blokken.

  Het gaat er niet om dat je hem erachter houdt. Het gaat erom dat je er alles aan doet om hem achter je te houden. En dat is iets wat de meeste F1 coureurs van het huidige veld niet meer doen. Mannen als Verstappen, Ocon en Sainz. Ze gaan tenminste tot het gaatje.

Weten jullie wel dat Perez de eerste beuk weer uitdeelde in Baku?
Het stuk voor de bocht stuurde Perez weer in op Ocon. Ik kan me daarom ook voorstellen dat Ocon daarna dacht de dood of de gladiolen. Dat was de reden dat ze samen chrasden!
