Esteban Ocon reed 'geen perfecte race'

Nadat de Force India's de vorige race nog kansen op een podium in rook zagen opgaan door een onderlinge crash, zat er deze week niet meer in dan de P7 en P8 die Sergio Perez en Esteban Ocon scoorden. De jonge Fransman maakt, ondanks dat hij tijdens de afgelopen race zijn teamgenoot de muur in drukte, een sterke indruk in zijn eerste volledige jaar in de Formule 1 en eindigde tot nu toe 8 van de 9 races in de punten, met een vijfde plek tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje als beste resultaat. Ocon kon ook na de race in Spielberg weer vier punten aan zijn totaal toevoegen en staat momenteel op de achtste positie in het rijderskampioenschap.

Voor de camera's van Sky meldde Ocon: "Het was een sterke race, maar niet perfect. Ik had een goede start en won twee plekken. Daarna verloor Lewis zijn achterkant bij het uitkomen van bocht 3 en daarom moest ik hem ontwijken en daardoor verloor ik die plek weer. De strategie was ook niet geweldig, want we zijn met deze strategie ongeveer 10 seconden verloren. aan het eind werd het nog krap met Felipe, maar we hebben de punten toch weer binnen."

"Het was niet makkelijk om in de slotfase de snellere auto's voorbij te laten, zonder tijd te verliezen ten opzichte van de auto's om je heen. Als je zoveel auto's langs moet laten, moet je ook rekening houden met de races van de anderen," reageerde Ocon toen hem gevraagd werd hoe hij om was gegaan met de blauwe vlag-situaties aan het einde van de race. "Dat gaf geen geweldig gevoel."

  Juist, niks uitzonderlijk talent, zeker een goed coureur maar wordt wat mij betreft iets te veel op een voetstuk geplaatst.

  Hij doet het meer dan behoorlijk. Zijn teamgenoot is ook niet de minste. Daarnaast eindigt hij vrijwel altijd vlak achter Perez. Hij zal alleen maar beter worden.

  @Dikkekop: onthou je eigen woorden. Doorgaans kun je het talent van een coureur afmeten aan de lengte van zijn F1-carriere, en het is volstrekt duidelijk dat Ocon een blijvertje is. Perez hoort overduidelijk tot de generatie die over een jaar of drie de dienst uitmaken.

  Je hoort mij ook niet zeggen dat Ocon geen blijvertje is. Ik vind gewoon dat hij behoorlijk overschat wordt.
