Hogere bochtensnelheden en snellere rondetijden in 2017

Bandenleverancier Pirelli heeft een reeks statistieken over het afgelopen Formule 1-seizoen naar buiten gebracht. Daarbij zijn geen verrassende feiten tevoorschijn gekomen, eerder een bevestiging van wat al bekend was. De bochtensnelheden lagen dit jaar bijvoorbeeld behoorlijk hoger dan in 2016, maar het is fijn dat Pirelli helpt om te kwantificeren hoeveel precies.

De Italiaanse bandenfabrikant pakte er drie van de snelste bochten op de kalender bij; bocht 9 op het circuit van Barcelona, Copse Corner op Silverstone en Pouhon op Spa-Francorchamps. In al deze voorbeelden lagen de snelheden minstens 30 kilometer per uur hoger dan vorig jaar. In bocht 9 op Barcelona ging de snelheid omhoog van 215 naar 245 kilometer per uur, de coureurs raasden met 290 in plaats van 260 kilometer per uur door Copse en in Pouhon nam de snelheid toe van 253 naar 289 kilometer per uur.

Die hogere bochtensnelheden hebben automatisch ook snellere rondetijden tot gevolg. Gemiddeld lagen de rondetijden in de kwalificaties dit jaar 2,450 seconde lager dan in 2016. In de races was het verschil met vorig seizoen gemiddeld zelfs 2,698 seconde.

Dit had ook een nadelige consequentie, namelijk dat het aantal inhaalacties in 2017 met 435 ongeveer gehalveerd is ten opzichte van vorig seizoen. Red Bull Racing had het meest inhalende rijdersduo van het veld. Daniel Ricciardo zorgde voor 43 geslaagde inhaalacties en Max Verstappen voegde daar 22 inhaalacties aan toe. Ricciardo is meteen ook de coureur met de meeste inhaalacties op zijn naam. Met dertien inhaalacties in de Britse Grand Prix was hij tevens degene met de meeste inhaalacties in één race.

Het aantal pitstops lag met 533 relatief laag. Het komt neer op 26,7 stops gemiddeld per race of 1,5 stop per coureur per race gemiddeld. De meeste kilometers zijn afgelegd op de drie zachtste compounds. Sergio Perez spande de kroon met 6.261 kilometer op de superzachte band. De harde band is nauwelijks gebruikt. Esteban Ocon is 'grootgebruiker' met 74 kilometer op die compound.

Red Bull Racing en McLaren hebben het meest met prototypes van de compounds voor 2018 getest, respectievelijk 2.638 en 2.350 kilometer. Force India zet daar minder dan 500 kilometer met de Pirelli-banden voor volgend seizoen tegenover.

En opnieuw een dikke faal uit de koker van de FIA door ondoordachte symptoombestrijding met een averechts effect.

'Laten we iets bedenken waardoor de motor minder belangrijk wordt en de onderlinge verschillen kleiner worden'

Goed idee! Wat dacht je van meer vleugels en bredere auto's en banden, wow, dat klinkt goed! Wat kan er nou mis gaan?

Heel leuk dit, maar de races van dit jaar waren er niet om van te smullen. Volgend jaar komt die teenslipper er nog bij en dan gaat de F1 qua populariteit nog verder achteruit, al helemaal buiten Nederland.

Goed, dit was een stap de goede richting op. Nu doorpakken en vooral het ground effect laten terug keren. Tests met de nieuwe IndyCar hebben bewezen dat dit een grote stap vooruit aldaar is om dichter achter elkaar te kunnen rijden op normale road courses. Nu de Formule 1 nog dit goede voorbeeld volgen.

Teveel veranderingen in 1 keer met dit als effect.
Er zullen weinig anderen zijn maar ik vind/vond het allemaal mooier toen Max debuteerde, veel meer acties, met en zonder drs.
De actie op de baan bedoel ik dan. De wagens blijven, en dat is allemaal smaak gerelateerd, niet de mooiste meer.

Jaren terug, zonder drs en totaal andere wagens waren er ook mooie inhaalacties, acties die zijn blijven hangen zoals Hakkinnen bij Schumacher en Zonta ertussen. Alonso op Schumacher in Turkije, Verstappen op Barrichello enzovoort. Allemaal pareltjes mede mogelijk gemaakt door stuurmanskunst.

  Nee hoor, je bent niet de enige. Het zijn alleen niet teveel veranderingen, maar de verkeerde.
  Dat het aantal inhaalacties terug zou lopen was prima te voorspellen, ik begrijp daarom helemaal niets van deze veranderingen...
  Ja, de auto's zijn 'stoerder' geworden, ze gaan sneller, maar dat waren eigenlijk de enige positieve effecten van deze wijzigingen.
  Zoals Beri hierboven al aangeeft zouden we naar grondeffect toe moeten en een groot deel van de aerodynamica moeten verbieden zodat er geen last meer is van vuile lucht en de auto's elkaar kunnen volgen op korte afstand.
  Maar alsjeblieft niet opnieuw lapmiddelen die een averechts effect hebben, laat ze nu eerst maar een jaartje goed nadenken over hoe het beter kan om per 2021 met een goed doordachte oplossing te komen.
