Leeftijd hielp Hartley bij drukke schema in 2017

Brendon Hartley mocht aan het eind van 2017 vier races meedoen in de Formule 1. Hij deed dat in combinatie met zijn werkzaamheden in het World Endurance Championship, waardoor hij in acht opeenvolgende weekenden in actie kwam. Zijn ervaring in de autosport hielp Hartley daar naar eigen zeggen doorheen.

Hartley mocht eerst optreden tijdens de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten als coureur bij Toro Rosso. Daarna reed hij nog de races in Mexico, Brazilië en Abu Dhabi, net als de WEC-races in Japan, China en Bahrein en Petit Le Mans op Road America. Dat is een hoop, maar zijn ervaring hielp hem: "Ik denk dat ik dat acht of negen jaar geleden niet had kunnen doen", zei Hartley.

"Ik ben blij met hoe ik ermee omgegaan ben. Ik voelde me bij vlagen moe en soms een beetje futloos, maar de drie races ging het beter omdat de tijdzones dichter bij elkaar lagen. Het team deed daarnaast goed werk om mij niet te zwaar te belasten als het niet nodig was en het zo simpel als mogelijk te maken."

In 2018 mag Hartley fulltime aan de slag bij Toro Rosso. Hij is blij met de uitdaging die voor hem ligt. "De eerste race in Austin was een belangrijk moment in mijn carrière. Ik wist dat ik geen domme dingen moest doen en het stap voor stap moest bekijken, dus dat heb ik ook gedaan. Er valt een groot gewicht van mijn schouders nu ik een heel seizoen mag rijden. Ik ben trots en optimistisch, maar ik weet dat het hard werken is. Ik ben me bewust van de uitdaging, maar ik ben optimistisch en ik heb er zin in."

Gasly gaat nog een flinke kluif aan hem hebben. Hard rijden kan hij, dat heeft het WEC wel bewezen. Waar ze echter het gevecht zullen hebben is mij nog niet duidelijk. De Honda kan alle kanten op...

Lijkt me een hele aardige gozer, die Hartley.
Ben benieuwd hoe hij gaat presteren t.o.v Gasly. In principe moet hij Gasly verslaan volgend jaar met al zijn race ervaring.

  Het zou ook wel leuk zijn als er een wat oudere coureur doorbreekt. Ik heb nog steeds een stille hoop dat Frijns ooit nog de F1 haalt, maar besef dat die kans haast wel verkeken is.

  Verwacht Hartley ook boven Gasly, niet alleen vanwege zijn ervaring maar ook omdat Marko m.i. nooit zo overtuigd is geweest van Gasly.
  Wellicht zijn zelfs beide coureurs slechts ‘tussenpausen’, maar blijft afwachten...
