Szafnauer: "Perez en Ocon volwassen genoeg om te duelleren"

Force India's chief operating officer Otmar Snafzauer heeft onthuld dat het team gelooft dat Sergio Perez en Esteban Ocon volwassen genoeg geworden zijn om weer vrij met elkaar te racen in 2018.

Afgelopen seizoen hadden Perez en Ocon aanvaringen met elkaar in de Grands Prix van Azerbeidzjan, Hongarije en België. Daarna ontnam Force India hen het recht om met elkaar een duel aan te gaan, omdat dat als te risicovol werd ervaren. Snafzauer denkt nu echter dat de heren geleerd hebben van hun fouten en geeft aan dat ze vrij zijn om te racen. "Ze begrijpen beter wat ze moeten doen en ze hebben geleerd van hun fouten. Ze weten hoe ze zich moeten gedragen en wij ook, dus komend seizoen zou het beter moeten gaan", aldus Snafzauer tegenover Autosport.

De beslissing van Force India om onderlinge gevechten te verbieden kwam na de wedstrijd in België, waar Perez en Ocon tweemaal met elkaar in aanraking kwamen. De spanning was toen al om te snijden, nadat een botsing in Azerbeidzjan ze een podiumfinish gekost had. Het was een lastige, maar noodzakelijke beslissing volgens Snafzauer. "Je wordt bekritiseerd als je het doet, maar ook als je het nalaat. Sommige media vonden zelfs dat we het eerder hadden moeten doen. We lieten ze racen en toen we ze dat recht afnamen, kregen we daar kritiek op. Hebben we het uiteindelijk op de juiste manier gedaan? Waarschijnlijk, want we zijn vierde geworden bij de constructeurs."

Mooie uitleg van Snafzauer. Het geeft aan dat op het scherpst van de snede performen ook betekent dat je controversiële beslissingen moet nemen. Onderlinge duels prima, maar zodra teamgenoten elkaar van het podium afrijden wordt ingegrepen. Dat is dezelfde lijn die ook Mercedes en Red Bull hanteren.
