Brendon Hartley verheugt zich op kennismaking met Bakoe

Scuderia Toro Rosso-coureur Brendon Hartley heeft in zijn carrière al op veel circuits en bijzondere locaties geracet, maar nog nooit in Bakoe. Komend weekend maakt hij kennis met het lange stratencircuit in de Azerbeidzjaanse hoofdstad. In de simulator heeft de Nieuw-Zeelander al de nodige meters op deze baan gemaakt, maar het echte werk is toch altijd anders.

Hartley: "Ik kijk er altijd naar uit om een nieuw circuit te bezoeken. Ik weet niet hoeveel circuits ik door de jaren heen al bezocht heb, maar een nieuwe baan zorgt toch nog steeds voor wat extra opwinding. Bakoe lijkt me uniek. Het is een stratencircuit en er is dus geen ruimte voor fouten, wat me altijd wel bevalt, maar de baan bevat ook een aantal interessante bochten."

"Het gedeelte bij het kasteel doet me denken aan Macau, een van mijn favoriete circuits. Naast veel werk in de simulator en het terugkijken van beelden van voorgaande jaren probeer ik me zo goed mogelijk in het stratencircuit van Bakoe te verdiepen, zodat ik binnen tien rondjes op snelheid ben. Simulator-werk is over het algemeen meer voor engineers dan voor coureurs, om aan afstellingen te werken, maar op weg naar een nieuw circuit spitst het werk zich wat meer toe op de rijder."

"Uiteraard zijn er altijd tienden te vinden tijdens het daadwerkelijk ervaren van een circuit; waar liggen bepaalde hobbels, welke gevolgen heeft de wind, hoe zijn de omstandigheden. Dat moet je ondergaan. Maar als je op honderden circuits gereden hebt, probeer je vergelijkbare bochten op te diepen in je geheugen en die aan elkaar te knopen om te kijken of dat je op weg kan helpen."

"Ervaring is belangrijk bij het leren van een nieuw circuit. De simulator is handig en zit zo dicht mogelijk tegen het echte werk aan, maar het is altijd lastig inschatten. Zijn de kerbstones exact hetzelfde? Biedt de baan net zoveel grip? Spelen andere factoren een rol? Heeft de simulator rekening gehouden met stukjes rubber op het wegdek? Ik kan niet wachten om donderdag over de baan te wandelen en vrijdag mijn eerste rijdende meters te maken in Bakoe."

Quiz vraag: Welke rijder heeft op de meest verschillende circuits een Formule 1 race gereden?

  Het gaat om betrokkenheid bij F1 weekends op meest verschillende circuits (dus niet alleen races, maar ook trainingen en kwalificaties). Voor Patrese en Hill zijn het echt races geweest, naar de rest heb ik niet gekeken nagekeken.
  
  Giedo van der Garde als voorbeeld: Één seizoen formule 1, met 19 races. 20e weekend was Hockenheim 2014 als testrijder (Giedo’s Duitse GP in 2013 was op de Nürburgring).
