Force India: "Ram liever een opponent dan je teamgenoot"

Het team van Force India heeft coureurs Sergio Perez en Esteban Ocon meegegeven dat ze niet elkaar moeten uitschakelen. Vorig jaar kwamen de twee teamgenoten met elkaar in aanvaring in Bakoe en de Indiase renstal wil een herhaling van zulke incidenten koste wat het kost voorkomen.

Dus mocht de een de ander in het nauw drijven, dan moet een tegenstander daar maar de dupe van worden. Force India-directeur Otmar Szafnauer vertelde aan Sky Sports F1: "We hebben onze rijders op het hart gedrukt dat als ze de keuze hebben tussen een opponent en hun teamgenoot, ze te allen tijden de opponent maar moeten rammen en niet hun teamgenoot."

Dat was tijdens de Chinese Grand Prix zichtbaar, toen Perez en Renault-rijder Nico Hülkenberg elkaar bij de start dwars zaten, maar de Mexicaan wel een botsing met Ocon vermeed. Dat hij als gevolg van die actie wat terrein prijs moest geven, dat is dan maar zo.

Szafnauer: "De eerste ronde en de start zijn ontzettend moeilijk te controleren. Er spelen zoveel factoren een rol. Bijvoorbeeld dat Hülkenberg de uitloopstrook nodig heeft en bij het terugkeren op de baan vlak voor een van onze coureurs terecht komt. Zulke dingen heb je niet in de hand."
