Force India-reserve Nicholas Latifi mikt op racezitje voor 2019

Nicholas Latifi heeft zijn zinnen gezet op een Formule 1-stoeltje voor 2019. De Canadees, die dit jaar actief is de Formule 1 als reserverijder voor Force India, komt dit weekend voor het eerst in actie tijdens een Grand Prix. Latifi zal de eerste training rijden voor zijn thuispubliek.

"Het wordt erg speciaal voor me", aldus Latifi tegenover Le Journal de Montreal. De Canadees was vorig jaar actief als reservecoureur bij Renault, maar maakte voor dit seizoen de overstap naar Force India. Voor 2019 wil de Canadees nog een stapje hogerop, namelijk zelf racen.

"Carlos Sainz en Nico Hulkenberg blijven volgend jaar waar ze zitten, maar bij Force India is de toekomst van Sergio Perez en Esteban Ocon nog niet zeker. Ikzelf wil niet nog een seizoen Formule 2 doen. Mijn doel is de Formule 1."

Onlangs investeerde Latifi's vader een flinke som geld in het team van McLaren, maar volgens de Force India-reserve en McLaren heeft die investering niets met hem te maken. "De samenwerking heeft niets met Nicholas (Latifi, red.) te maken", aldus een woordvoerder van McLaren. "We voelen geen druk om hem in een van onze auto's te zetten in de toekomst. We zoeken alleen naar de beste coureurs."
