Magnussen: “P4 en P5 gerechtigheid voor GP Australië”

De oogst van Kevin Magnussen in Oostenrijk liegt er niet om: tien punten en de zevende plaats in de tussenstand van het kampioenschap. De Deen is momenteel best of the rest en daar is hij erg blij mee.

In de 50sterace van Haas F1 Team werden Romain Grosjean en Magnussen vierde en vijfde. Over de boordradio liet de Deen meteen weten erg blij te zijn voor zichzelf én het team, dat in Australië dergelijke resultaten nog zag verdampen door problemen met de wielmoeren. “Goed gedaan mannen! Jullie verdienen dit. Dit is gerechtigheid voor Australië. We zijn terug!”

De zevende plek in het kampioenschap betekent dat Magnussen momenteel ‘best of the rest’ is achter de mannen van Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull. Graag houdt hij die positie vast. “Dat is geweldig. Het zou een geweldig doel zijn om te bereiken dit jaar. Als ik zevende kan worden in het kampioenschap, betekent het dat ik mijn eigen ‘mini-kampioenschap’ gewonnen heb.”

Toch wil Magnussen niet te vroeg juichen, want er kan nog het een en ander beter bij Haas. “Consistentie is nog steeds ons zwakke punt. Het ligt niet aan de absolute snelheid in de auto, maar het vertalen naar prestaties op de baan. We hebben gezien dat we dit jaar slechte weekenden hebben, zoals in Monaco en eigenlijk ook in Canada. Het is een stuk beter dan vorig jaar, maar we moeten dit de baas blijven en zo blijven presteren.”

Optimaal resultaat van Haas team door uitval van RIC, HAM en BOT na goede kwalificatie. Force India en Sauber ook goed gepresteerd terwijl Renault een beetje tegen viel. GRO en MAG hebben vertrouwen kunnen tanken met nog 3 races te gaan voor de zomerstop.

  Mee eens. Best of the rest is gewoon uitstekend voor Haas. Het mag dan wel een halve Ferrari gekocht hebben. Maar voor zon klein team is het gewoon heel goed wat ze gepresteerd hebben.

  Ik was bang dat Haas na de eerste races dit seizoen heel snel weer terug zou vallen naar het achterveld. Ze hebben mij (en vele anderen denk ik) in ieder geval postief verrast dit seizoen. Kevin’s race was gisteren een beetje in de schaduw van Romain’s die zich voor het eerst dit seizoen liet gelden. Maar we mogen niet vergeten dat Kevin ook een prima race gereden heeft. En inderdaad die 7e plek, voor de Renault mannen, gerennomeerde talenten als Gasly en LeClerc en iemand als Alonso zal heel goed op zijn CV staan. Ook lekker voor zijn marktwaarde!

  Ik ben ook ontzettend verrast dat ze in deze fase van het seizoen nog steeds zo snel zijn als in Australie. Dacht goede oude, veel van Ferrari uiteraard maar ze hebben minder budget dan Mclaren en Renault dus ze gaan het afleggen tegen de ontwikkelingssnelheid van die teams en dan sta je toch plots buiten de top 10 te zwemmen.
  
  Niks is minder waar en ze bewijzen nu met dit resultaat maar ook op de zaterdag in Oostenrijk dat ze gewoon echt snel zijn.

Solide en nette race van de mannen. Wordt daar toch als een kleine overwinning gevierd. Schijnt dat Steiner rond 1:00 uur vannacht poedelnaakt en strontlazerus tegen het Mercedes motorhome heeft staan pissen waarna Toto een koude bak water vanaf de eerste verdieping heeft gegooid.
Lallend en lachend liep Gunther weg en schreeuwde naar Toto “Nu weet ik hoe het voor jou moest voelen!”
