Kubica over terugkeer bij test in 2017: "Ik was een rookie"

Robert Kubica is van mening dat veel mensen te hoge verwachtingen hadden van zijn tests in 2017. De Pool mocht in 2017 eindelijk weer achter het stuur kruipen van een Formule 1-auto, maar naar eigen zeggen moest hij qua ervaring helemaal opnieuw beginnen.

"Met een auto uit 2012 had ik het misschien nog gekund", aldus Kubica tegenover GPupdate.net. Die wagen kwam nadrukkelijk overeen met de dingen die ik nog wist, maar in Hongarije kon ik niets gebruiken van wat ik nog wist uit het verleden. Het voelde als een debuut."

Volgens Kubica hebben de verwachtingen van buitenstaanders een verkeerd beeld gevormd. "Je zet een rookie in de wagen, die in de tijd dat hij nog racete één van de topcoureurs was. Je denkt dus dat hij iets bijzonders is, maar in werkelijkheid is hij een rookie. Want ik was een rookie."

Uiteindelijk greep Kubica naast een racestoeltje bij Renault voor de rest van het seizoen. De Franse renstal hield vast aan Nico Hulkenberg en Jolyon Palmer, totdat laatstgenoemde werd vervangen door Carlos Sainz. Ook een poging om een racestoeltje bij Williams te bemachtigen, mislukte.

Kubica kreeg tijdens de wintertest de kans achter het stuur van de Williams en direct reed de Pool 1,2 seconde sneller dan Lance Stroll. "Het was heel belangrijk om meteen snel te zijn. Dit voor iedereen die dacht dat ik in de Abu Dhabi-test een seconde tekort kwam", vervolgt de enkelvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar.

Ondanks zijn ongeluk, denkt Kubica dat hij vandaag de dag op bepaalde vlakken een betere rijder is dan in 2010. "Vanwege mijn beperkingen is het niet voldoende dat ik hetzelfde doe als de anderen. Ik moet meer doen. Maar om meer te doen, heb ik tijd in de wagen nodig. Daarom was het zo belangrijk dat ik wat tijd in de auto zou krijgen, toen Williams me deze rol bood voor dit jaar."

Kubica houdt nog altijd hoop op een terugkeer op de grid voor 2019. Waar weet ik niet. Het wordt meer een automatisme. We vergeten vaak dat autosport een sport is. Je moet oefenen, je moet het doen. Het moet een automatisme worden, net als het drinken van een glas water. Water drinken vereist geen extra aandacht. Dit is hetzelfde."

Ik zou Kubica graag terug zien achter het stuur van een formule 1 wagen. Ik hoop dat ze Stroll en/of Sirotkin aan de kant zetten zodat Kubica het kan proberen

  Nadeel voor Kubica, is dat ze de centen van pa Stroll en Sirotkin zo hard nodig hebben bij Williams.... Ik denk dat Kubica veel meer en betere feedback geeft, om de wagen beter te ontwikkelen, dan Stroll en Sirotkin bij elkaar...

Ik vrees weer voor ontelbaar Kubica berichten totdat alle teams bezet zijn. Het begint een zielig verhaaltje te worden, maar aan doorzettingsvermogen ontbreekt het iig niet bij Kubica.
