Robert Kubica: "Kans dat ik in 2019 op de grid sta is niet zo groot"

Na een afwezigheid van bijna acht jaar keerde Robert Kubica tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje terug in een officieel Grand Prix-weekend. De Pool, die begin 2011 zwaar gewond raakte bij een rally ongeluk in Italië, maakt tijdens enkele vrije trainingen zijn opwachting in de FW41 van Williams. Williams is tevreden met het werk van Kubica, maar Kubica schat zijn kansen op een terugkeer als racecoureur in de Formule 1 niet hoog in.

Volgens Kubica is de kans groot dat Williams volgend jaar vasthoudt aan Lance Stroll en Sergey Sirotkin. Beide coureurs nemen geld mee en dat is nodig een privaat team als Williams om te overleven. Kubica over zijn situatie met betrekking tot volgend seizoen: "Natuurlijk zou ik graag terug keren als racecoureur, maar als ik in de rol van manager of teambaas zit dan is het een risico als ze mij nemen. Teams kiezen eerder voor de veilige weg en nemen weinig risico's met hun rijdersbezetting. Uiteraard hoop ik nog steeds op een kans."

Kubica debuteerde in 2006 halverwege het seizoen als vervanger van Jacques Villeneuve bij BMW Sauber. De Pool zou tot en met 2009 rijden voor de Duits-Zwitserse renstal, maar maakte voor 2010 de overstap naar Renault. Hoogtepunt in Kubica's loopbaan was zijn eerste en enige zege tijdens de Grand Prix van Canada 2008. Vorig jaar keerde Kubica terug achter het stuur van een Formule 1-auto bij het team van Renault.

Snap zijn zogenaamde manager, namelijk de heer Rosberg ook niet. Vanaf het begin is dit een kansloos avontuur geweest. Iemand had Kubica tegen zichzelf moeten beschermen. Kubica's momentum ligt al jaren achter hem. Kan hij niets aan doen, maar helaas dat zijn de feiten.

    Helaas... ik zou hem nog wel eens zien racen in de formule 1. Maar misschien is het goed wanneer hij de formule 1 verlaat en WEC, DTM of formule E gaat rijden?

      Racen? Nee... maar f-1 verlaten hoeft ook niet. Hij weet als geen ander wat er in het hoofd van een rijder omgaat. Zou jammer zijn als geen enkel team gebruik zou maken van zijn kennis en ervaring. En wellicht heeft hij ook marketingtechnisch nog een bepaalde waarde. Dus teams...

      Ik snap de ambitie aan de ene kant wel, maar op zijn leeftijd is het misschien verstandig om het te laten bij de constatering dat hij heeft aangetoond nog steeds een formule 1 eagen te kunnen besturen, ondanks zijn handicap. Maar realistisch gezien is er eigenlijk geen enkel uitzicht op een toekomst waarin hij om zeges kan vechten, en een coureur met zijn historie en talent zou niet minder moeten willen.
      De topteams hebben hun bezetting rond, en als er ene stoel vrij komt de komende jaren is het logisch dat er een generatiewissel gaat plaatsvinden en de jonge honden de vrijgevallen plaatsen gaan invullen. Talent genoeg. Jammer, maar niet meer dan logisch.

    Ik weet het niet. Er is veel aanstormend talent, ik zie die liever instappen.
    En het is nog maar de vraag of een coureur momenteel voor Williams wilt rijden. Daar zijn weinig credits te halen voorlopig. En ook helaas.
    Onvoorstelbaar dat twee topteams van weleer nu achterin bungelen.

    Alle respect voor Kubica en zijn doorzettingsvermogen, maar het is misschien verstandiger om de F1 te verlaten en zich te storten op een andere raceklasse. Misschien is indy iets voor hem.

    Ik zou hem ook wel willen zien terugkeren bij Sauber. Zeker nu Sauber enige rol van betekenis is in het middenveld

    Die gaat nergens meer rijden in de F1, ik heb dat gelijk al gezegd, hij moet zich daar gewoon bij neer leggen. Ik denk dat hij blij mag zijn wat hij nu doet.

    Zolang Williams met die 2 huidige pannekoeken van coureurs blijft rijden, zal het niks geven. Stroll zou ik houden vanwege de cashflowe, maar die Rus moet exit. Als hij Stroll niet de baas kan zijn, dan heeft hij niks in de F1 te zoeken. Dan neem een risico en laat Kubica rijden, hij is hierdoor waardevoller voor het team voor de ontwikkeling en wie weet gaat hij punten pakken die uiteindelijk geld opleveren.

      Probleem is alleen dat de familie Stroll niet iemand zal willen die sneller is dan Stroll zelf. Er is simpelweg teveel geïnvesteerd. In de tijd dat Stroll nog F3 reed had Williams een simulator waar Massa en Bottas van af moesten blijven. Vervolgens is er ontzettend veel testwerk gedaan in een oude Williams overal ter wereld etc. Stroll en zijn familie heeft gewoon andere belangen dan die van Williams en Williams kan weer niet meer zonder het geld van diezelfde familie. Williams moet heel snel aan andere inkomsten komen zodat ze zonder Stroll kunnen anders is het heel snel afgelopen met dit team.
