Mercedes hoopt erop dat Niki Lauda bij de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi weer in de paddock rondloopt na het ondergaan van een dubbele longtransplantatie. Mocht dat toch niet lukken, dan verwacht Toto Wolff dat zijn landgenoot in ieder geval bij aanvang van het nieuwe seizoen terugkeert.

Eind juli werd Lauda in het ziekenhuis opgenomen door de slechte toestand van zijn longen. Na het ondergaan van een longtransplantatie duurde het lang voordat de drievoudig wereldkampioen weer uit het ziekenhuis mocht vertrekken, maar inmiddels geeft hij zelf aan dat hij weer aan de slag wil.

Wolff ziet Lauda graag zo snel mogelijk terugkeren. Als het kan al in Abu Dhabi, maar ander mag Lauda in ieder geval verwacht worden bij de Grand Prix van Australië. Dat vertelde Wolff aan de Oostenrijkse krant Österreich. "Het is de beslissing van Niki en de doktoren. Als het niet in Abu Dhabi gebeurt, dan zal hij in maart bij ons zijn in Australië."
