Sirotkin wil in de toekomst terugkeren in de Formule 1

Sergey Sirotkin zegt dat hij de Formule 1 niet opgeeft. De Rus debuteerde dit seizoen bij Williams, maar in 2019 wordt zijn plekje ingenomen door Robert Kubica. Sirotkin behoudt SMP Racing als sponsor en zou eventueel WEC kunnen gaan rijden. Volgens hem is er echter nog niets zeker.

"Er zijn nog geen plannen. Ik weet niet of ik WEC ga rijden, maar de Formule 1 is de prioriteit", zei Sirotkin in Abu Dhabi tegenover de Russische commentator Alexei Popov. "De Formule 1 is nog geen gesloten boek voor mij en eerlijk gezegd kan ik zo ook niet stoppen. Ik weet wat ik kan en dat heb ik door verschillende redenen niet kunnen laten zien."

"We werken eraan en ik weet niet wat de opties zijn, maar ik ben er zeker van dat er mogelijkheden gaan komen. Ik ga vechten voor een terugkeer in 2020 en hoop dat Williams zich gaat verbeteren", aldus de Rus die samen met teamgenoot Lance Stroll duidelijk de langzaamste was in Abu Dhabi.

"Ik heb veel om dit team en hun successen gegeven en een lach op hun gezicht zou voor mij veel betekenen. Ik vind het jammer dat ik komend seizoen niet in het team zal zitten, maar ik wens ze het beste met heel mijn hart. Ik weet hoe erg ze het verdienen", sluit Sirotkin af.

Geheel mee eens. Er mogen best wel wat teams bijkomen. Zelfs als deze in de achterhoede ergens racen.
