Perez: "Ocon de betere in de kwalificatie, ik in de race"

Force India-coureurs Sergio Perez en Esteban Ocon waren de afgelopen seizoenen erg aan elkaar gewaagd. Toch is het voor Perez duidelijk wie op welk punt sterker was: Ocon had de overhand in de kwalificatie, de Mexicaan was volgens hemzelf de betere in de race.

Perez scoorde in 2018 meer punten dan teamgenoot Ocon: 62 om 49 stuks. Tevens was het de Mexicaan die de enige podiumplaats scoorde. In de race was Ocon echter de coureur die vaker voor zijn teamgenoot eindigde en ook won de Fransman het kwalificatieduel. Volgens Perez klopt het beeld van de races niet helemaal, want zelf had hij het idee dat hij de snellere van de twee was in de races. Dat vertelde hij aan RaceFans.

"Ik denk dat hij de overhand had in de kwalificatie, hoewel het onderlinge verschil nog geen tiende is. Hij stond vaker voor me dan ik voor hem. In de race is het gat echter groter en volgens mij maakte ik in de races altijd de grotere verschillen. Mijn snelheid was altijd iets beter in de race. Het zat dicht bij elkaar, maar hij was iets beter in de kwalificatie en ik iets beter in de race."

      Ja, Perez was vooral stukken beter in het 'botsautootje' spelen.

      en Perez weet dat als je op een ronde gereden wordt door de leider in de wedstrijd, dat je daar dan niet agressief tegen moet gaan racen omdat je denkt dat je sneller bent.

      En Perez heeft meer dan een handvol podia... Eerlijk is eerlijk. 1 of twee kan nog eens geluk zijn... 8 dan ben je gewoon een top racer.

      @Tyla: die 8 podia, dat klopt natuurlijk. Maar wat voor coureur moet Bottas dan wel niet zijn? Als ik goed geteld heb heeft die wel 31 podia gehaald. Om dat nou te gebruiken om een coureur te beoordelen gaat mij wat ver. Lijkt op scorebord-journalistiek.
      Ik vind Perez zeker geen slechte coureur. Maar een topracer vind ik hem echt niet. Hoewel Perez dat zelf uiteraard absoluut wel vindt)

      HEMEX. leuk dat je die noemt. De Williams podia van Bottas waren zeker verdiend. Het aantal podia bij Mercedes is gewoon gegeven door de auto. Het is daarom ook wel leuk om dit te vergelijken met de teammaten:
      Perez - Kobayashi: 3-1 Bottas - Massa: 9-5
      Perez - Hulkenberg: 4-0 Bottas - Hamilton: 21-30
      Perez - Ocon: 1-0 3 -20 overwinningen

      Perez presteerd t zelfde als Bottas in een middelmatige auto... Dat Bottas daarna bij een top team niet voldoende presteerd en slechts 21 podia behaald in 41 races met een kampioenschapsauto die meer dan 50% van de races feitelijk een winnende auto bleek te zijn (los van de mogelijke overwinningen extra zonder gridstraffen of andere pech) moeten we bij zoiets achterwegen laten idd. Wat Perez qua podia binnensleept met een middenmoot is gewoon goed.

      Zoals je het nu stelt, ben ik het met je eens. Wat ik eigenijk bedoelde is dat 'podia' geen goed criterium om op te beoordelen. Er zijn een heleboel dingen zijn die mee kunnen spelen in de uitslag. Vergelijken met een teammaat is al een stukje beter, hoewel ook daar de omstandigheden (pech/mazzel) een grote rol kunnen spelen. Laten we het er over eens zijn dat Perez een beter coureur is dan Bottas. Persoonlijk zou ik hem niet een 'topcoureur' noemen, maar dat hangt er natuurlijk vanaf hoe groot je die groep maakt. Bij de 10 beste F1 coureurs zal hij wel zitten. Bottas niet.

    Tsja Perez roept dat inderdaad vaak tijdens de race en dan wordt hem de les gelezen door degene aan de andere kant van de radio "Ja, maar Ocon is zijn brandstof/banden aan het managen en het wordt tijd dat jij dat ook eens gaat doen" en vervolgens valt Perez ver terug.

    Hoe dan ook, als we naar de realiteit kijken: Perez is slechts 5 keer voor Ocon gefinished en Ocon 10 keer voor Perez. Daar is nou niet direct uit duidelijk dat Perez beter zou zijn in de race.

    Dat Perez meer punten heeft komt vooral doordat hij Ocon eraf beukte in Baku en daar vervolgens het podium pakte in plaats van Ocon.

      Opnieuw kom je gewoon met onwaarheden. Ocon ging eraf in een duel met Raikkonen, niet met Perez.
