Perez: "Force India de juiste keuze als Mercedes en Ferrari bezet zijn"

Sergio Perez begint in 2019 aan zijn zesde seizoen bij Racing Point. Volgens de Mexicaan is het voormalige Force India de beste plaats in de pits, zolang er geen plaatsen vrij zijn bij Ferrari en Mercedes.

Perez begon zijn carrière bij Sauber, dat hij na twee seizoenen inruilde voor een weinig succesvol jaar bij McLaren. Daarna volgde de overstap naar Force India en daar voelt hij zich dan ook op zijn gemak. "Ik ben hier al jaren langer dan ik verwachtte. Ik voel me op mijn gemak hier. Ik ben erg optimistisch. Als je niet bij Ferrari of Mercedes terecht kan, dan is Force India de juiste plaats", vertelde Perez aan RaceFans.

Perez was in 2018 betrokken bij de operatie om Force India onder curatele te stellen. Door de overname van Lawrence Stroll en zijn consortium kon het team in België toch weer aan de start verschijnen. Volgens Perez kan het team de lat voor haarzelf hoger gaan leggen dan voorheen.

"Er zit veel potentie in dit team. Ik was in twee van de laatste drie seizoenen de beste van de rest en afgelopen jaar zat ik er dicht bij. Er is ook perspectief voor de toekomst. We zullen zien hoe de zaken er volgend jaar uitzien, maar ik ben opgewekt over de toekomst van dit team. Ik heb veel met het hele team gepraat, van monteurs tot engineers, en iedereen is opgewekt. Ook Lawrence is erg enthousiast over het project."

"We weten dat het een project voor de lange termijn is en ik heb het gevoel dat we met de teambazen een goede richting ingeslagen hebben. Alles zou op zijn plek moeten zijn. We weten echter ook dat dit tijd gaat kosten. We hebben bij andere teams kunnen zien hoe lang het geduurd heeft. Als er echter een team is die de volgende stap kan zetten, dan is het Force India."

Wat wel duidelijk is, is dat Perez geen vertrouwen heeft in Renault. Want hij had daar al twee jaar op rij voor kunnen tekenen.

Ik vind trouwens dat de topteams toch een kans hebben laten liggen door Perez niet te constracteren. Ik denk namelijk nog steeds dat Sergio beter is dan Bottas, Lecler... [Lees verder]

  Ben erg benieuwd naar Kimi. Ik denk dat hij het dit jaar waanzinnig naar de zin zal hebben. Gewoon lekker racen, zonder bemoeienis van het team.
  Hij is de laatste maanden al veel vrolijker dan ik hem ooit gezien heb.

  Het lijkt in 2019 een mooie strijd te worden om de ‘best of the rest’ titel. En het zou goed kunnen dat Kimi herboren op de grid verschijnt en geweldige duels uitvecht met de Renaults en Force India. Het zou mooi zijn als McLaren hierbij kan aanhaken.

  Het is blijkbaar nog steeds moeilijk om in te zien dat Leclerc een voortreffelijk debuut seizoen heeft gereden en een gigantisch talent is. Maar misschien weet jij het wel beter dan Ferrari.
  
  En dit zeg ik als iemand die Perez enorm hoog heeft zitten. Leclerc heeft meer talent dan Perez.

  Perez werd bij McLaren compleet zoek gereden door Button dat seizoen en er waren klachten over zijn instelling.
  
  Perez is iemand die één keer per seizoen een mazzeltje heeft dat hij met een gok op afwijkende strategie (doordat hij zo slecht kwalificeert kan hij zich dat veroorloven) plus een hoop uitvallers een keer een leuk resultaat neer zet.

Tuurlijk zegt hij dat, hij weet ook heus wel dat RB veel beter is.....en dat Force India pas op plek 4 of 5 zit......
