Ocon: "Racing Point gaat het gat naar de topteams verkleinen"

Esteban Ocon, voormalig coureur van Force India, zou er niet raar van opkijken wanneer zijn oude team het gat naar Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull Racing kan dichten en kan heersen over het middenveld. De Fransman is zijn zitje bij het nieuwe Racing Point-team voor aankomend seizoen kwijtgeraakt aan Lance Stroll, de zoon van de huidige eigenaar Lawrence Stroll.

"Het is een enorm gat dat moet worden opgevuld, maar ze gaan een stap vooruit zetten. Dat is zeker. Middelen zijn altijd het probleem geweest en dat zal dit jaar geen probleem meer opleveren. Ik denk dat ze sterke kandidaten gaan zijn."

"Ik was het afgelopen jaar erg onder de indruk van de professionaliteit van dit team en de motivatie die ze hebben om resultaten te behalen. Dat is waarschijnlijk het grootste ding. Ze zijn hongerig en dat maakt het verschil. Het maakt ze niet uit hoelang ze bezig zijn en daar heb ik overigens een goed voorbeeld van."

"Ze vlogen terug vanuit Mexico en kwamen rond twee uur in de nacht thuis aan. De volgende morgen zaten we om acht uur, met de jetlag nog in de benen, alweer in de simulator. Iedereen was kapot, maar toch werkten we alweer. Dat is waarom we zo competitief waren, ook al hadden we de middelen niet. Met de huidige middelen gaat het waarschijnlijk veel makkelijker voor ze worden."

Weinig slapen lijkt nuttiger dan het vaak is. Kwaliteit van het werk lijdt er ernstig onder. Ach ja, Ocon is nog jong en moet nog veel leren.
