Perez verkoos Racing Point boven McLaren vanwege positieve toekomstplannen

Hoewel Sergio Perez op de shortlist zou hebben gestaan om Stoffel Vandoorne te vervangen bij McLaren, is de Mexicaan zijn werkgever Racing Point Force India trouw gebleven omdat zij volgens hem een beter toekomstperspectief hebben.

"We vinden Sergio een uitstekende coureur en hij staat inderdaad op onze lijst," verklaarde McLaren CEO Zak Brown afgelopen jaar. Perez reed in 2013 voor McLaren, maar werd vervangen door Kevin Magnussen nadat hij een beroerd seizoen draaide. "McLaren is een mooi team maar de toekomstplannen van Racing Point Force India hebben mij doen besluiten om hier te blijven. Ik ben hier al zo veel jaar en voel me op mijn gemak, zeker met de positieve 'vibe' die er nu rond gaat door de overname van het team."

Perez was een van de mensen die er tijdens de Belgische Grand Prix voor zorgde dat Force India failliet kon gaan en de zaak kon worden overgenomen door een consortium van Lawrence Stroll. Stroll steekt zijn ambities niet onder stoelen of banken en wil van Force India 'een van de grootste' teams maken in de Formule 1.

"Ik heb zo veel met dit team meegemaakt, om te beginnen het proces om een doorstart te maken, een nieuwe eigenaar en het voelt voor mij dat ik mijn werk hier af moet maken. Ik ben erg blij dat deze zaak destijds goed opgelost is en dat ik me heb verbonden aan het team voor 2019. Ik heb gedurende mijn periode altijd alles gegeven en ik wil graag met deze mensen de volgende stap maken."

De Mexicaan was verrast dat het team geen terugval had nadat het werd overgenomen: "Ik denk dat het met het gehele team te maken heeft dat dat niet is gebeurd. We zijn erg close met elkaar en hebben elkaar door deze moeilijke periode heen gesleept. Ik denk dat we een indrukwekkende dienst hebben bewezen en iedereen op zijn hoede moet gaan zijn wat Racing Point betreft."

Wat weet jij daar nu van Ari51. McLaren is altijd een sterk team geweest terugval wil niet zeggen dat McLaren afgeschreven is. Ferrari en McLaren hebben samen de F1 gemaakt waar nu de teams hun vruchten van kunnen plukken.

Lijkt me de juiste beslissing. McLaren gaat nog veel jaren nodig hebben om echt grote stappen te maken. Racing Point zal hopelijk ook aankomend seizoen weer kunnen vechten voor P4 in het kampioenschap. Zeker gezien Mercedes weer een compleet nieuw motor concept heeft voor 2019 denk ik dat ze zomaar eens het derde team kunnen worden in 2019.

Logische keuze, op basis van de laatste jaren zit je sportief gezien bij RPI beter dan bij McLaren.
Daarbij heeft hij geen leuk jaar gehad bij McLaren, dat speelt ook wel mee denk ik.
Hoop persoonlijk wel dat hij spijt krijgt van zijn keuze ;-)

Echt Mclaren eerst weg gooien en dan weer proberen terug te halen, zal met Honda ook wel gebeuren in beide gevallen kansloos. Het wordt voorlopig niets met dat team oude glorie

Dan is Sergio Perez wel een koe-reur in plaats van een coureur, Ferrari lag in zijn verschiet zelfs dat heeft hij voorbij laten schieten voor wat hij nu doet.... tweede viool spelen samen met Lance Stroll. Racingpoint komt zo nooit uit de Canadese verf.

  Op dat moment leek het de juiste keuze om voor McLaren te kiezen. Echter, achteraf blijkt het juist een hele slechte beslissing. Ferrari durfde destijds niet. Terwijl Perez toen veel meer heeft laten zien in de Sauber dan Leclerc het afgelopen jaar heeft laten zien.
