Massa: "Binotto als teambaas kan goed uitpakken voor Ferrari"

Ferrari kan wel eens een goede zet gedaan hebben door Mattia Binotto aan te stellen als nieuwe teambaas. Dat zegt voormalig Ferrari-coureur Felipe Massa, die tevens blij is dat het team Charles Leclerc in 2019 een kans geeft.

Binotto neemt in 2019 het roer over bij Ferrari van Maurizio Arrivabene. Laatstgenoemde werd verantwoordelijk gehouden voor het wederom mislopen van de wereldtitels en moest zijn biezen pakken. Hoewel Binotto nog geen ervaring heeft als teambaas, kreeg de technisch directeur toch te horen dat hij de nieuwe eindverantwoordelijke zou worden. Hij blijft vooralsnog ook technisch directeur en dat kan volgens Massa goed uitpakken voor Ferrari.

"Binotto is een rustige gast", vertelt de Braziliaan aan Autosport. "Hij is een man die de capaciteit heeft om rustiger te werken en minder van de druk bij Ferrari absorbeert dan Arrivabene. Het wordt een nieuwe ervaring voor hem, want hij was nooit eerder teambaas. We moeten zien hoe hij gaat werken, want het is een belangrijke verandering. Hij wordt de baas, maar blijft ook bij de technische zijde. Eerlijk gezegd kan dat goed uitpakken."

Massa ziet, in navolging van Toto Wolff, dat Ferrari soms worstelt met haar mentaliteit. Er moet en zal gewonnen worden door de Italianen en dat brengt veel druk met zich mee. "Binnen Ferrari gebeurt veel op een lastige manier door de druk. Zij voelen dit heel erg, dat was altijd zo binnen het team. Er was een periode dat ze het minder voelden, omdat ze in de tijd van Jean Todt veel goede resultaten behaalden."

"Jean was iemand met veel leiderschap in elk deel van het team", vervolgt Massa. "Hij zorgde ervoor dat verschillende onderdelen van het team zonder druk samenwerkte. Daarna werden zaken op een andere manier aangepakt. Ferrari heeft tegenwoordig altijd de druk en verplichting om te winnen en dat is een probleem."

Massa ziet kansen voor Ferrari om in 2019 succesvol te zijn met Sebastian Vettel en nieuwe man Leclerc. Vooral van de Monegask heeft hij hoge verwachtingen. "De technische structuur is competitief en ze hebben erg goede coureurs. Wat Ferrari nu doet met Leclerc is erg goed. Deze jongen kan in de toekomst een geweldige kampioen worden. Ik hoop en zou het toejuichen als dat al snel gebeurt."

Kun je zien dat samenwerken tussen Italianen en Fransen beter verloopt dan een teambaas van eigen bodem.
