Norris baalt van mislopen punten bij debuut: "Niet trots op mezelf"

Lando Norris kon zijn sterke kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Australië niet bekronen met een puntenfinish. De debutant eindigde door 'een paar foutjes' op de twaalfde plaats en hij was daarom ook niet blij met zichzelf.

De eerste race van 2019 was tevens de debuutrace van Norris in de Formule 1. In de kwalificatie maakte hij een sterke indruk met de achtste positie, maar in de race behaalde hij geen punten. Na zijn stop zat de McLaren-coureur lang klem achter de Alfa Romeo van Antonio Giovinazzi, waardoor onder andere Lance Stroll en Daniil Kvyat via een late stop voorbij konden komen. Norris kwam op een gegeven moment voorbij aan Giovinazzi, maar dat mocht voor punten niet meer baten.

"Het was te laat", reflecteert Norris realistisch. "Het kostte me duidelijk de posities van Kvyat en Stroll en uiteindelijk dus ook een plaats in de punten. Ik ben een beetje geïrriteerd, want er was veel meer potentie. De auto had de snelheid om in de top 10 te eindigen. Eigenlijk heb ik iedereen in de steek gelaten, dus dat moet ik niet nogmaals laten gebeuren. Er was een mogelijkheid om punten te scoren, vooral omdat sterke jongens als Daniel Ricciardo en Romain Grosjean uitvielen. Een van hen reed ook voor mij."

Met de twaalfde positie was Norris de beste van de drie coureurs die hun eerste Formule 1-race rijden, maar het mislopen van de punten zorgt voor een zure nasmaak bij de Brit. Hij was dan ook niet trots op zijn prestatie in Melbourne. Wel was Norris erg tevreden over de auto die McLaren voor hem op het circuit neergezet had.

"Ik ben niet echt trots op mezelf. Wel op het team. Ik had vandaag een redelijk goede auto. Hij was niet perfect, maar goed genoeg om in de top 10 te eindigen. Ik maakte een aantal foutjes die ons daarbuiten lieten vallen en daarom ben ik niet zo blij als dat ik gisteren was. Het is wel lekker dat de eerste race nu geweest is. Voorafgaand was ik redelijk nerveus, maar na het einde ben ik redelijk blij."

Denk dat de 12e plaats ook wel realistisch is . De goede kwalificatie kwam mede doordat de baan sneller werd en hij met een heleboel andere op het juiste moment buiten was . Daarintegen lagen een paar coureurs te pitten tijdens de kwali .

Een pak beter dan Stoffel Vandoorne die in zijn allereerste race ( als invaller dan nog ) slechts 1 puntje wist te behalen.

Goed gedaan Norris die punten komen later wel als je verder in het seizoen komt en voor McLaren kan er een klein feestje af omdat zij de weg naar boven weer gevonden hebben.
