Norris draaide als simulatorcoureur dienst van 18 uur bij McLaren

Lando Norris debuteerde dit seizoen in de Formule 1, maar hij was vorig jaar al betrokken bij McLaren betrokken. Als simulatorcoureur draaide hij tijdens een Grand Prix-weekend zelfs een dienst van 18 uur.

Norris is een product van het opleidingsprogramma van McLaren. De Brit werd in 2017 kampioen in het Europees Formule 3 en werd afgelopen seizoen tweede in de Formule 2, achter George Russell. In het laatste jaar combineerde hij zijn werkzaamheden met werk als simulatorcoureur van McLaren en daar heeft hij nog een opvallend verhaal over. "Ik herinner me dat ik op een donderdag de dag doorbracht in het MTC en daarna voor een paar uur slaap naar huis ging, om om middernacht terug te komen."

"Daarna was ik niet eerder klaar dan 18.00 uur - dus dat was een lange dag! Ik heb echter zoveel geleerd door dergelijke sessies te doen. In die rol spendeer je uren in de simulator om correlaties te doen, feedback te geven en hints te geven wat het team op het circuit kan doen. Voor mij was dat geweldig, omdat het me hielp voorbereiden op nu", vertelde hij aan Formula1.com.

Norris liep voor debuut mee met verschillende afdelingen

Norris was dus al onderdeel van McLaren toen hij dit jaar zijn debuut mocht maken in de Formule 1. Om zich nog beter voor te bereiden op zijn eerste races, liep de 19-jarige coureur een aantal dagen mee op de verschillende afdelingen van zijn werkgever. "Ik had acht dagen werkervaring, waarbij ik alle afdelingen binnen McLaren heb gehad."

"Ik had de kans om wat dingen te bouwen en het mee naar huis te nemen, wat ik best cool vind. Ik genoot ervan, werken mer carbon en composieten. Ontwerptechnologie was de les waar ik op school het meest naar uitkeek! Ik heb tijd doorgebracht bij de hoofdafdelingen, daarna de crew van de nachtshifts ontmoet en later de engineers en de mensen die in de kantoren werken. Dat hielp me echt bij mijn integratie in McLaren."

Ik zou wel eens een sim race tussen Norris/Verstappen VS Hamilton/Vettel willen zien. En dan in precies dezelfde wagens.

  Die spelen vast liever arcadespelletjes als F1 2019 op de Playstation 4 in plaats van serieus te simmen met rFactor 2 en iRacing. Ieder zo zijn hobby. Zou het ook wel humoristisch vinden om dat eens te zien. De sim only rijders van Team Redline, Biela Racing Team, Pure Racing Team etc etc tegen F1 rijders.

Ach, als je werk je hobby is en je krijgt er zo belachelijk veel voor betaald, dan zal je er geen problemen mee hebben om een keer een "dienst" van 18 uur te draaien..

  Denk dat bijna iedereen het zou doen als er geen andere verplichtingen (familie, vrienden, etc zijn) Zeker als je het ook erg leuk vind, met tegenzin 18 uur ben je inderdaad dubbel gesloopt.
