Perez: "Heb Ricciardo verteld dat hij Red Bull nodig had voor actie in bocht 1"

Sergio Perez wist een directe strijd met Daniel Ricciardo in Mexico te winnen. De Australiër had volgens de Racing Point-coureur een Red Bull nodig om zijn enige inhaalpoging te laten slagen.

Voor eigen publiek scoorde Perez een mooi resultaat: de Mexicaan pakte namens Racing Point de zevende plaats. Het was de derde keer in vijf races dat hij op die positie eindigde en hij zette daarmee een sterke reeks resultaten voort, want sinds de zomerstop eindigde hij in vijf van de zes races in de punten. In de slotfase moest hij zijn positie wel met hand en tand verdedigen ten opzichte van Ricciardo.

Een keer waagde de Renault-coureur een inhaalpoging, maar die mislukte. Dat zag Perez eigenlijk al van verre aankomen. "Ik wist dat hij het niet ging redden. Na de race vertelde ik hem dat hij niet meer de Red Bull heeft om dat soort acties te kunnen maken. Hij zat behoorlijk op de limiet en ik remde redelijk laat. Het was goed dat ik hem wat ruimte gaf, zodat we contact konden voorkomen", vertelde hij aan GPToday.net.

Perez benadrukte dat hij wist dat het lastig zou worden om Ricciardo voor te blijven, maar dat dit door banden te sparen uiteindelijk wel gelukt is. "Ik wist dat hij erg sterk was op de mediums, dus met een groot verschil tussen de banden kwam hij erg dichtbij. Het zou erg lastig worden - ik probeerde mijn banden een beetje te sparen richting het einde en ik denk dat dit mij hielp."

  Normaal lukte RIC zo'n divebomb ook wel in de Renault, maar hij had deze keer zijn rembalans niet optimaal staan... ?

  Ja man. Nog steeds een jammerlijke beslissing. Soms heb ik even leedvermaak, maar dat is kortstondig en daarna kom ik tot de conclusie dat ik hem mis bij Red Bull. Het is een prachtkerel die een domme keuze heeft gemaakt en ook nog eens nadelig voor Red Bull en Max.

Mooiste duel van de race imo; DRS vertekende de verhoudingen een beetje, maar het Renault-blok kon goed meekomen met de Merc. En dat is voor ons fans alleen maar goed nieuws.

Het zal zeker meespelen. Heb ooit een gesprek gezien op Rossbergs YouTube channel. Toen ging Ricciardo al weg bij Red Bull. Was iets van een uur.
1 van de items was de dive bomb waar Ricciardo bekend om is. Ricciardo schiet vaak verder door dan bijvoorbeeld Max in zo'n situatie deed. Rossberg vertelde toen iets interessants (voor bij althans). Volgens Rossberg weet een rijder al dat hij een dive bomb gaat doen. Op het rechte stuk heb je dus alle tijd om de rembalans aan te passen.

Ricciardo weet dat nu, maar ogenschijnlijk kreeg hij het deze keer niet voor elkaar. Perez zou wel eens gelijk kunnen hebben.

In ieder geval liet Perez weer eens zien dat hij uit het goede racehout is gesneden.
