Caio Collet baarde afgelopen weekend opzien door met een Formule 1-bolide van Renault te crashen tijdens een demonstratie-run in Sao Paulo. De jonge Braziliaan is echter niet de eerste coureur die zich tijdens een demo liet verrassen.

Pastor Maldonado was in zijn vijf Formule 1-seizoenen meer dan eens betrokken bij incidenten en crashes. De Venezolaan deed het echter ook een keer tijdens een demonstratie-run in Caracas, de hoofdstad van zijn thuisland. Dat gebeurde in 2012. De Venezolaan spinde, waarna hij hard in aanraking kwam met een stoeprand. Dat zorgde voor schade aan de rechter achterwielophanging van de Williams FW33.

Max Verstappen in Rotterdam, 2014

Net als Collet maakte Max Verstappen zijn debuut in een Formule 1-auto tijdens een demo-run. De Nederlander deed dat in 2014 tijdens VKV City Racing in Rotterdam. Verstappen tikte met de voorvleugel de muur aan, nadat hij kort daarvoor al teruggeduwd moest worden door de marshals op het circuit. De schade aan de in Toro Rosso gehulde Red Bull was echter niet gigantisch.

Sebastian Vettel in Milaan, 2018

Op de lijst met crashes tijdens een demo-run komt ook de naam van viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel voor. De Ferrari-coureur ging vorig jaar de fout in tijdens het Fan Festival van de Formule 1 in Milaan. Vettel kwam met de SF71-H, de op dat moment actuele bolide van Ferrari, de straten van de Italiaanse stad op, maar hij haalde de bocht niet en reed daardoor de voorvleugel van de bolide kapot.

Kamui Kobayashi in Moskou, 2013

De hardste crash tijdens een demonstratierun komt op naam van Kamui Kobayashi. De Japanner was in 2013 de reservecoureur van Ferrari en werkte in Moskou een demonstratie af met de F60. Dat liep niet goed af, hoewel hij daar zelf misschien niet heel veel aan kon doen. Op kletsnat asfalt raakte Kobayashi de controle over de auto kwijt, waarna hij hard in de vangrails klapte. De schade aan de Ferrari was dan ook groot.
