Fernando Alonso kijkt graag naar Max Verstappen: "Staat altijd in aanvalsmodus"

Fernando Alonso vindt het erg lastig om een beste coureur in de Formule 1 aan te wijzen. Wel geeft de tweevoudig wereldkampioen toe dat hij graag naar de aanvallend rijdende Max Verstappen kijkt.

Eind 2018 vertrok Alonso na achttien jaar uit de Formule 1. De Spanjaard wilde zich na een aantal weinig succesvolle jaren richten op andere avonturen in de autosport. Een terugkeer naar de discipline waarin hij twee wereldtitels behaalde is ook nog niet uitgesloten, hoewel dat in ieder geval niet in 2020 zal gebeuren.

Als Alonso de televisie aanzet om naar de Formule 1 te kijken, dan valt het hem op dat het lastig is om een beste coureur aan te wijzen, hoewel hij graag naar Verstappen kijkt. "Er is geen beste coureur in de Formule 1. Het is niet mogelijk om alles te analyseren. Gedurende een aantal jaar moet je bekijken wie er beter is. Wel hou ik er tegenwoordig van om Max Verstappen te volgen. Hij staat altijd in de aanvalsmodus en dat is goed voor de kijkers", vertelde hij aan El Confidential.

Alonso verwacht geen zege in Dakar

Komende winter staat er een gloednieuwe uitdaging te wachten voor Alonso: in januari zal hij afreizen naar Saoedi-Arabië om zijn debuut te maken in de Dakar Rally. Hij zal daaraan meedoen met ondersteuning van het fabrieksteam van Toyota, waarvoor onder andere ook de Nederlander Bernhard ten Brinke racet. Alonso maakt zich vooralsnog geen illusies dat hij echt om de overwinning mee kan doen in Dakar.

"Ik zou liegen als ik zou zeggen dat ik op het niveau van geweldige specialisten als Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz of Al-Attiyah zou zitten. Het is onmogelijk om dat te doen in zes maanden. Het goede is dat deze zes maanden van voorbereiding als zeer verrijkend voor mij zijn geweest als coureur en als persoon."

Ik heb Max toch ook redelijk vaak horen zeggen dat p4 maximaal was en dat hij de race "gecruised" heeft...

Dit geeft hem een goede indruk van wat hij kan verwachten tijdens de Dakar."
Ze behaalden daar de derde plaats. Goed bezig met z'n tweeën op weg naar Dakar.

  Verstappen is weliswaar één van de snellere, maar zeker niet één van de intelligentere, coureurs. Ik zeg niet dat dat hem de das om gaat doen, maar het is zeker een zwakke plek.
