Esteban Ocon was de vervanger voor Russell, maar paste niet in de Williams-bolide

Esteban Ocon heeft bevestigd dat hij in eerste instantie gevraagd werd om klaar te staan als mogelijke invaller voor George Russell. De 1,86 meter lange Fransman paste echter niet in de Williams.

Hoewel Russell met 1,85 meter ook niet de kleinste coureur van de grid is, bleek de een centimeter langere Ocon dus niet in de Williams te passen. De lengte van een coureur speelt een cruciale rol, want een coureur die te lang is, past niet in de Formule 1-auto. Als je lang bent, zit je ook sneller aan het minimumgewicht. Daardoor moeten deze coureurs erg goed op hun voeding en spiermassa letten.

Vorig weekend in Abu Dhabi was Williams-coureur Russell niet helemaal fit en het idee was om Ocon op stand-by te laten staan. Probleem: de Franse coureur kon zijn lengte niet in de bolide van Russell. "George Russell was ziek [in Abu Dhabi] en ik was de enige die hem kon vervangen, maar ik paste niet in de auto. Het was duidelijk niet mogelijk”, zo onthulde de Renault-coureur in Le Figaro.

"Het vraagt te veel werk van iedereen, omdat het niet gemakkelijk is om in de auto te stappen.” Uiteindelijk had Williams een vervanger gevonden. De Rus Sergey Sirotkin was de aangestelde reserve.

Nieuwe reglementen brengen perspectief

De Renault-coureur denkt dat dit probleem gedeeltelijk zal worden opgelost in 2021 wanneer de nieuwe reglementen van kracht gaan in de Formule 1, die het mogelijk maakt om een langere autolengte te hebben. "De breedte van de cockpits zal hetzelfde blijven, maar er zal meer ruimte in lengte zijn. Dit is goed nieuws.”

Worden de auto's nóg langer? Ik heb een paar schaalmodellen 1:18. Als je de Ferrari van Vettel van vorig jaar vergelijkt met de Renault van Alonso uit 2006 is dat een enorm verschil! Die Ferrari is mega en de Renault echt heel klein. Naar mijn mening zijn de auto's te veel gegroeid afgelopen jaren.

  Mee eens. Als je de huidige wagens van bovenaf ziet zijn het haast limousines. De Mercedes spant daarmee de kroon met een lengte van volgens mij meer dan 5 meter. Ik vind het gewoon ronduit lelijk. De breedte (2 meter) vind ik nog niet eens zo'n probleem, maar de lengte mag van mij wel 1,5 meter vanaf.

Lange coureurs zijn niet gewild. Vooral in de kartsport kun je als je te lang bent het wel vergeten. Ken dan ook een coureur die anti groei pillen kreeg voorgeschoteld van zijn overfanatieke vader. (niet max hoor).

Ik denk dat die ene cm geen verschil maakte, maar juist de bouw van Ocon. Hij heeft veel langere benen dan Russel, die juist een grotere romp heeft. Langere benen, betekend dat je hoger in de bolide moet zitten. Hoe lager je namelijk in de auto zit, hoe meer je je benen moeten kunnen buigen. Hoe langer de benen, hoe minder ruimte er voor het buigen van de benen is in de monocoque. Anders gezegd, kleinere coureurs kunnen echt meer liggen in de auto's, coureurs met langere benen niet.
