Marko lacht: "Slechts drie zeges heeft mij een aantal weddenschappen gekost"

Helmut Marko voorspelde voorafgaand aan 2019 vijf overwinningen voor Red Bull Racing. Het team bleef echter steken op drie en daardoor heeft de Oostenrijkse talentscout en adviseur wel 'een aantal weddenschappen' verloren.

Voorafgaand aan het afgelopen seizoen stapte Red Bull Racing over van motorleverancier. Renault werd daarbij mee ingeruild voor Honda. Hoewel velen, inclusief het team zelf, verwachtten dat er een overgangsjaar zou komen, deed Marko een opzienbarende voorspelling. Hij voorspelde dat Red Bull in het eerste jaar van de samenwerking met Honda vijf races ging winnen.

Tegenover ServusTV onthulde Marko dat hij die uitspraken niet alleen in de media gedaan heeft, maar dat hij ook een aantal weddenschappen had afgesloten waarbij met die stelling gespeeld werd. Lachend geeft de Oostenrijker toe dat het hem geld heeft gekost. "Dat we maar drie races hebben gewonnen, heeft me een aantal weddenschappen gekost."

'Wel potentie om vijf, zes races te winnen in 2019'

De zeges van Red Bull Racing in 2019 kwamen allen van de hand van Max Verstappen. De Nederlander wist zich na een slechte start naar de zege te knokken in Oostenrijk, hield zijn hoofd koel in de lastige, onder wisselende omstandigheden verreden Duitse Grand Prix en domineerde ten slotte in Brazilië. Daarnaast eindigde Verstappen nog zes keer op het podium.

Marko denkt echter dat zijn ambitieuze voorspelling wél vervuld had kunnen worden en daarvoor wijst hij naar de races in Mexico en de Verenigde Staten. "We hadden het potentieel om vijf races te winnen, en mogelijk zelfs zes." In Mexico werd Verstappen zesde, nadat hij zijn pole position door een gridstraf verloor en vroeg in de race betrokken raakte bij incidenten met Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas. In de Verenigde Staten moest Verstappen beide Mercedes-coureurs voor laten gaan.

In Austin was Mercedes te snel, daar hadden ze niet kunnen winnen. In Singapore echter, waar ze een complete miskleun hadden met meegebrachte onderdelen die een te stijve afstelling opleverden (door een fout die in de simulator gemaakt was), hadden ze juist kunnen winnen.   Vorig jaar had redbull twee coureurs die konden winnen. Waar Max het moet liggen pakte Ricciardo de zege (China, Monaco). Dit jaar had er met een betere tweede coureur zeker meer in gezeten.
