Mika Hakkinen geniet er niet van om Daniel Ricciardo niet mee te zien doen om de overwinningen. Wel adviseert hij de Australiër om niet te gaan twijfelen aan zijn eigen kwaliteiten.

Ricciardo is een product van het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull en halverwege het seizoen 2011 mocht hij in de Formule 1 debuteren bij HRT. In 2012 en 2013 reed hij voor Scuderia Toro Rosso, waarna in 2014 promotie volgde naar het grote Red Bull Racing. Hoewel de Australiër in zijn periode bij het Oostenrijkse team zeven keer als eerste over de finish kwam, deed hij nooit echt mee om de wereldtitel.

Voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2019 maakte Ricciardo echter de opvallende overstap van Red Bull naar het fabrieksteam van Renault. Het was een transfer die weinigen aan zagen komen, mede doordat Renault al jarenlang niet meedoet om de zeges. Hakkinen vertelde in een podcast van Unibet dat hij het jammer vindt dat Ricciardo niet meer vooraan meedoet.

"Het is triest om Ricciardo in een auto te zien racen waarmee hij niet kan winnen. Zodra je de overstap maakt van een team dat wint naar een team dat te maken heeft met tegenslagen, dan komen er de nodige frustraties om de hoek. Ricciardo is een positieve gast, maar hij moet oppassen dat hij niet aan zichzelf gaat twijfelen. Dat hij niet vooraan meedoet ligt namelijk niet aan zijn vaardigheden, maar aan de auto."

Helemaal eens.

Ik zou Ricciardo liever naast Leclerc zien rijden dan Vettel die over zijn top hene lijkt.

  Precies: het was zijn eigen keus. Maar diep in mijn hart zie ik hem - zoals hierboven ook gezegd wordt - liever naast Leclerc rijden in de Ferrari.

  Ik weet ook wel at het zijn eigen keuze was, het gaat mij er om dat ik het liefst de sterkste coureurs bij de 3 beste teams zie.
  
  Ideaal zou voor mij zijn voor 2020:
  - Ferrari: Leclerc en Ricciardo
  - Mercedes: Lewis en Alonso
  - Red Bull: Max en Vettel
