Marko: "Lichaam Verstappen was jong, maar zijn geest was drie tot vijf jaar verder"

Helmut Marko kan zich zijn eerste gesprek met Max Verstappen nog goed herinneren. Daar waar hij normaal zo'n twintig minuten met een coureur praat tijdens de eerste kennismaking, duurde het gesprek met de Nederlander anderhalf uur.

Verstappen wist vele ogen op zich gericht toen hij in 2014 zijn autosportdebuut maakte. In het Europees Formule 3 wist hij veel indruk te maken op de Formule 1-teams, die hem graag in hun opleidingsprogramma wilden hebben. Uiteindelijk trok Red Bull aan het langste eind, mede doordat ze Verstappen voor 2015 een zitje in de Formule 1 konden beloven. Marko herinnert zich zijn eerste kennismaking met Verstappen in Graz nog goed.

"Hij was destijds zo'n vijftien jaar oud. Normaal praat ik zo'n 20 minuten met een coureur, zodat ik een idee krijg van zijn persoonlijkheid en de hele structuur om hem heen. Met Max heb ik toen anderhalf uur gezeten. Daar zat een heel jong lichaam, maar zijn geest was duidelijk drie tot vijf jaar verder in de ontwikkeling", vertelde Marko aan Motorsport-Total.com.

Debuut Verstappen in 2015 'niet zonder risico'

In 2015 volgde het Formule 1-debuut van Verstappen, die toen slechts één jaar autosportervaring had. Op dat moment was de Nederlander slechts 17 jaar oud, waarmee hij de jongste debutant aller tijden werd. "Natuurlijk is het een gewaagde stap en ook een significant risico als iemand 15 jaar oud is en slechts één jaar ervaring in een Formule-klasse heeft", beseft Marko.

Een extra gesprek bracht uitkomst voor Marko: "Toen zag ik hoe volwassen hij was en hoeveel hij geleerd had tijdens zijn tijd in de karts, en op welke manier hij deze tak van sport aanpakte." Dat overtuigde de Oostenrijkse talentscout van Red Bull, die geen twijfels kent over het vroege debuut van Verstappen. "Max riep ongelooflijke emoties en reacties op, maar achteraf gezien zou ik het weer op deze manier doen."

  Ik vind het ook nog steeds verbazingwekkend, maar met de paplepel in gegoten. Puik werk, en natuurlijk alle credits voor Max want eenmaal in de auto is ie op zichzelf aangewezen. En dan alle functies op het stuurwiel, en iemand aan de muur die dat in je oren loopt te tetteren, echt knap gewoon. De normale sterveling zou dit dan ook niet aan kunnen wat dan weer op het conto van Jos en Sophie bijgeschreven kan worden. Nederland kan trots zijn op dit enorme race talent.

  Ik begrijp ook nooit dat Belgie bijna geen aandacht besteed aan hem. Komt dat echt alleen door die vlag? Het is gewoon een halve belg. Ook op forums wordt hij door Belgen de grond ingeboord. Niet door allemaal hoor. Maar kom op het is maar een vlag die hij draagt. Ja hij Is Nederlands maar als Belg kun je hem ook supporteren hoor. Zonde dat we die vlag niet in 2en kunnen hakken op zijn overal.
