Juan Pablo Montoya staat bekend als een all-round coureur, die in de Formule 1, NASCAR, IndyCar en sportscars races wist te winnen. Afgelopen weekend slaagde de Colombiaan er ook in om in een Esport-evenement als winnaar uit de bus te komen.

In Miami nam Montoya deel aan Miami's Fastest Gamer, een spin-off van World's Fastest Gamer. Die competitie werd in 2017 gewonnen door Rudy van Buren, die daarmee een plek verwierf als simulatorcoureur bij McLaren. Afgelopen jaar was James Baldwin de winnaar van de competitie. Zij waren afgelopen weekend ook in Miami te vinden voor Miami's Fastest Gamer.

Naast Montoya stonden ook coureurs als Ed Jones (DTM/IndyCar) en James Davison (IndyCar/GT-racerij) aan de start van de wedstrijd, en ook jonge talenten als Eduardo Barrichello, Pietro Fittipaldi en Sebastian Montoya namen deel aan de race. Nadat hij als derde van start ging, wist Montoya de race te winnen, voor Jones en Barrichello. De beste Esporter was Baldwin op de vierde positie.

Na afloop van de race gaf Montoya toe dat hij genoten had van de intensiteit in de race. "Het is ongelooflijk. Ik kan niet geloven hoe intens het is als je tegen deze gasten racet op de simulator. Mijn hoofd was zo warm, omdat je heel gefocust moet zijn", verklaarde de zesvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar en tweevoudig Indy 500-winnaar. Ook over het niveau van de simracers was Montoya erg te spreken.

"Ik denk dat het cool is, omdat de simracers erg goed zijn. Ze brengen hier veel tijd mee door. Een van de dingen die je kon zien, is dat de racevaardigheid zich begon uit te betalen bij de jongens die veel in het echte leven geracet hebben. Qua pure snelheid over een ronde zijn de gasten in de sim erg goed, maar ik denk dat we ze vandaag gepakt hebben op de kleine details."

Het enige waar het voor simracers dus nog aan ontbreekt is een goede coach die ervaringen overbrengt. Iedereen kan de racelijnen goed leren in een sim en daarmee een goede ronde neerzetten. Tijdens een race komen er andere dingen bij kijken waar de echte racerij veel jaren ervaring mee heeft en dit ook overdraagt aan zijn coureurs.

Een goede simulator zou dit soort coaching misschien ook kunnen geven in de toekomst.

  Niet iedereen kan zomaar een snelle ronde neerzetten door de racelijnen te leren. Rempunten, remdruk voor of achter, remdruk op het pedaal of trigger, trailbraking ja of nee, waar kan je op je gas.... ik schat mijzelf bovengemiddeld in met bijv. GT Sport, maar de aliens zijn gemiddeld 2,5 sec sneller..

Absoluut 1 van mijn helden uit de racerij! Had als rookie al schijt aan de gevestigde orde, was snel, wild en brutaal!
Op de een of andere manier hoop ik dat hij nog een telefoontje krijgt van Toyota, om eens een LMP1 te proberen op LeMans...
