Esteban Ocon was 'gesloopt' na jaar op de reservebank bij Mercedes

Esteban Ocon racete in 2020 weliswaar niet in de Formule 1, toch was de Fransman na afloop van het seizoen helemaal uitgeput door zijn werkzaamheden bij Mercedes in de simulator én op het circuit.

Als onderdeel van het opleidingsprogramma van Mercedes kreeg Ocon in 2019 een rol als reservecoureur toebedeeld bij het team, nadat hij buiten de boot viel voor een vaste rol als coureur. In die functie heeft hij verre van stilgezeten. Tegenover Autosport gaf hij toe dat hij vaak een en weer ging tussen circuit en simulator en dat vergde veel van hem. "Het seizoen wat ik had was erg veeleisend."

"Ik sliep soms twee dagen niet, en het was behoorlijk gek - de hoeveelheid reizen, het aantal uren dat ik in de simulator zat en daarna het reizen naar het circuit, het dingen doen voor Mercedes. De hebben mij goed ingezet, maar het was veel. Na de test in Abu Dhabi kwam ik lichter dan ooit aan bij mijn trainingskamp. Ik was een soort van gesloopt door het jaar."

Ocon won 4,5 kilogram aan spiermassa

Desondanks vertelde Ocon ook dat hij sterker dan ooit aan het nieuwe seizoen gaat beginnen. Zo won hij gedurende de winter 4,5 kilogram aan spiermassa, onder andere tijdens een lang trainingskamp in de Pyreneeën. "Ik heb mijn hele vrije periode doorgebracht op trainingskamp op hoogte in de Pyreneeën, nog langer dan in het verleden het geval was."

"In plaats van op 5 of 6 januari te beginnen, was ik daar op 2 januari. In plaats van 23 december terug te keren voor Kerst, was ik daar pas op de 24ste. Dat soort dingen. Ik ben de hele winter niet thuis geweest. Ik ging heen en weer naar de fabriek. En mijn doelen zijn bereikt. Ik heb in twee maanden tijd vierenhalve kilo aan spiermassa gewonnen. Met mijn ontwikkeling ben ik dus tevreden. Het is goed en een solide basis om mee te beginnen."

Hopelijk kan hij samen met zijn teammaat en zijn team mooie dingen laten zien komend seizoen. Is het niet voor de top dan voor de subtop want daar acht ik ze inmiddels wel toe in staat. We gaan het meemaken.

  Voor wat betreft de rijders, ze hebben het talent ervoor in huis!
