Norris grapt bij onthulling MCL35: "Heb de auto bijna helemaal ontworpen"

Het tweede Formule 1-seizoen is aangebroken voor Lando Norris. De goedlachse Brit toonde zich bij de presentatie van de McLaren MCL35 weer eens van zijn grappige kant door te stellen dat hij de bolide 'zo ongeveer helemaal ontworpen' heeft.

Norris debuteerde in 2019 in de Formule 1 en in dat seizoen maakte hij een sterke indruk. De nummer 2 van het Formule 2-kampioenschap van 2018 deed dat bij McLaren en ook dit seizoen komt hij voor het Britse team in actie. Voor het eerst had hij ook invloed op het ontwerp van de nieuwe bolide van McLaren en daar speelde de 20-jarige coureur handig op in. “Ik heb de auto zo ongeveer helemaal ontworpen", vertelde hij bij de presentatie in Woking.

Daarna liet Norris doorschemeren dat de MCL35 meer aan gaat voelen zoals hij dat graag wil. "De basis voor deze auto is vorig jaar gelegd en alles waar we vorig jaar tegenaan liepen en wat we besproken hebben met de engineers is hierin verwerkt. Het is dus veel meer onze auto, want we hebben input gehad in het ontwerpproces. Het voelt hierdoor veel meer als mijn baby en mijn auto, dus ik kan niet wachten om ermee te rijden.”

Met een jaar ervaring gaat Norris dus aan het nieuwe seizoen beginnen. Al bij de presentatie merkte hij een groot verschil ten opzichte van vorig jaar. “Het voelt erg goed. Toen ik hier vorig jaar stond, scheet ik bijna in mijn broek. Nu heb ik veel meer vertrouwen, ik ben meer ontspannen en dat zorgt voor een betere voorbereiding op het seizoen.”
