Sergio Perez: "Korte voorbereiding heeft een flinke impact"

Gisteren werd de nieuwe RP20 van Racing Point gepresenteerd in het Oostenrijkse Mondsee. Net als vorig jaar zijn Lance Stroll en Sergio Perez teamgenoten. De Mexicaan denkt dat dit jaar wel eens het beste jaar uit zijn carrière kan worden, zo vertelde hij tijdens de presentatie aan de media.

Mooie wagen

De RP20 is de opvolger van de RP19 en is een mooie wagen volgens Racing Point-coureur Sergio Perez. De 30-jarige coureur uit Guadalajara: "De wagen ziet er geweldig uit, ik vind de kleuren echt prachtig. Uiteraard is onze eerste prioriteit niet hoe de wagen eruit ziet; het belangrijkste is hoe snel de wagen is. Ik hoop dat deze wagen ons in staat stelt om dit seizoen ook echt competitief te zijn."

"Ik kijk er ook erg naar uit om weer in de wagen te zitten. De laatste keer is alweer een lange tijd geleden, maar nu is het nog slechts enkele dagen voordat ik weer in een F1-wagen zal rijden. Ik kijk er erg naar uit om weer te kunnen rijden. Hopelijk kunnen we meteen meedoen in de competitie."

Korte voorbereiding

Veel fans kunnen het zich misschien niet voorstellen, maar zo'n 15 jaar geleden reden de Formule 1-teams met oorverdovende V10-motoren en werd er ook elke week wel getest door de meeste teams. De meeste kalenderjaren telden al snel 30-35 testsessies.

Toen Max Verstappen in 2015 begon in de Formule 1 werd er drie weken getest, elk van vier dagen. Het jaar erop werd in 2016 dit gereduceerd tot 2 testsessies van vier dagen. Ook dit aantal is gereduceerd. Sinds 2020 worden er twee tests verreden waarvan beide slechts 3 dagen. De Formule 1-teams kennen hierdoor een kortere voorbereiding en hameren vooral op betrouwbaarheid.

Sergio Perez zegt hierover: "Die korte voorbereiding heeft een flinke impact. Het is erg belangrijk om vooral geen betrouwbaarheidsproblemen te hebben. Daarnaast moeten we vooral niet crashen met de nieuwe wagen. Het is aan mij om samen met Lance zoveel mogelijk informatie te vergaren en zo het verschil te zien tussen dit jaar en de wagen van vorig jaar."

En toen kwam forumlid Damon Hill plots uit zijn winterslaap.

Man, ik heb er echt zin in! De wagens vind ik tot nu toe echt prachtig, en dan met name de McLaren... maar die Alpha Tauri mag er ook wezen natuurlijk en ook die nieuwe Williams ziet er mooi uit hoor.

Kijkend naar de foto is Perez er helemaal klaar voor, en Lance lacht (nu al) als een boer met kiespijn... terecht overigens want het snot zal hem weer voor de ogen gereden worden.

Verder blijf ik erbij dat Perez echt onderschat wordt. Nee, het is geen coureur in de categorie wereldkampioen maar een respectabele subtopper is het zeker.... 8 podiumplekken in auto's die tot het middenveld behoorde... daar kan bijvoorbeeld Hülkenberg in de verste verte niet over mee praten.

Perez heeft zijn grillen en mindere momenten, maar als er een podium in het verschiet ligt staat hij er altijd en vaak genoeg is hij ook gewoon best snel op zondagen. Jammer dat hij zo een flut teamgenoot heeft. Maar Money Talks.

De duur van het testen is afgenomen, maar de tools waarmee auto's ontworpen worden, de dyno's die gebruikt worden met een real-time connectie met state-of-the-art simulators, de verder doorontwikkelde CFD methoden en de windtunnel-tests, dragen allemaal bij aan de mogelijkheid om met meer voorspelbaarheid een auto te ontwerpen en te bouwen en dus met minder noodzaak voor het daadwerkelijk testen.
