Timo Glock: "Terugkeer in de F1 voor Nico Hulkenberg wordt erg moeilijk"

Nico Hulkenberg was de afgelopen tien jaar actief in de Formule 1. De Duitser reed voor Williams, Sauber, Force India en Renault maar vond geen stoeltje voor 2020. Hij gaf aan dit geen probleem te vinden en ook wel uitkeek naar een jaartje rust, maar zou wel klaarstaan mocht hij ergens moeten invallen.

Volgens landgenoot Timo Glock gaat het een moeilijk verhaal worden voor Hulkenberg om weer terug te keren in de Formule 1. Hij is van mening dat de sympathieke Duitser zijn focus moet verleggen naar het DTM.

De voormalig Toyota-coureur zegt hierover: "Als je eenmaal uit de Formule 1 bent is het erg moeilijk om weer terug te keren. Er kloppen altijd jonge coureurs, talenten op de deur van de Formule 1 en dan zijn er ook altijd jongens die sponsorgeld meebrengen. Voor een ervaren coureur is het moeilijker om dan terug te komen in een F1-stoeltje."

Overstappen naar DTM

Glock heeft zelf goede herinneringen aan zijn overstap naar de DTM. Hij zou Hulkenberg graag in de Duitse klasse zien rijden: "Ik denk dat een grote naam als Hulkenberg, met al zijn ervaring een goede toevoeging zou zijn voor het DTM-veld. Ik zou Nico erg graag zien rijden in het DTM."

      Hij heeft gelijk wat dit betreft. Hij was gewoon minder dan Perez met niet een klein verschil uiteindelijk. Die nul podiums zijn ook veelzeggend, aangezien hij in de Force India daar wel kansen op had, en meermaals races verpest heeft die hem daar hadden kunnen brengen. In drie gevallen zeer concreet zelfs. Hulkenberg is een prima coureur, maar uiteindelijk slechts een middenmotor.

      Geen flauw idee waar je dat haalt. Onderlinge raceresultaten van 2014 tot 2016: 22 - 21 in het voordeel van Hulkenberg. Onderlinge kwalificaties werd het 36 - 23 in het voordeel van Hulkenberg (oid, als ik er eentje naast zit in mijn statistieken, dat is mogelijk). Het is dan ook meestal door die mindere kwalificaties dat Perez op een gokkende strategie werd gezet die dan goed uitpakte in de race.

      In punten haalt Hulkenberg er dan 226, Perez 238, dat verschil is dus 1 vierde plaats over 3 seizoenen. Perez mag dan wel goed zijn in het oppikken van de rare podia, Hulkenberg was minstens even goed. Of dat dan goed genoeg was om een topper in de F1 te zijn? Waarschijnlijk niet, gezien Perez zijn zwak jaar bij McLaren. Maar om Hulkenberg een pak minder te vinden, dan heb je gewoon niet gekeken.

    Ik vind Nico Hulkenberg een toffe peer. De meeste teams zien het blijkbaar niet zitten om met hem in zee te gaan. Hieruit kun je dus concluderen dat ze hem niet goed genoeg vinden.

      Steiner heeft wel even met hem gesproken. Hulkenberg vroeg echter dermate veel dat ze niet eens de onderhandelingsfase in hoefden te gaan.
      Maar verder heb je waarschijnlijk wel gelijk. Wordt niet gezien als een goede ontwikkelaar of iemand die goed met het team werkt. En Saward zei ook al dat Hulkenberg wel erg genoot van de lage druk bij Renault, aangezien die auto toch niet snel ging en hij wel miljoenen verdienen en 'the good life' in Monaco kon leven zonder echt een bepaalde terging te voelen wat te willen presteren of verbeteren. Komt op mij over als een arrogante dweil in de originele zin van het woord. Mensen gebruiken het om te praten over iemand die een zonnebril op heeft of een ketting draagt, terwijl deze mensen interessant genoeg de daadwerkelijk arrogante Hulkenberg een 'leuke, gezellige, lekker normale jongen' vinden.
