Lando Norris wil elke race zijn helmdesign veranderen

Lando Norris debuteerde in 2019 in de Formule 1 voor het team van McLaren. Zijn contract werd verlengd en daarom rijdt hij dit jaar voor het tweede seizoen in de F1. De 20-jarige coureur heeft aangekondigd dat hij van plan is om voor elke race van het seizoen 2020 een andere helm te ontwerpen.

De FIA heeft de regels voor helmontwerpen in de aanloop naar dit seizoen opgeheven, voorheen waren de coureurs beperkt tot twee grote veranderingen tijdens een seizoen. De regel had maar weinig fans, namelijk Sebastian Vettel en Daniil Kvyat, die in het verleden felle kritiek hadden op de regel, die erop gericht was om de coureurs makkelijker herkenbaar te maken in hun auto's dankzij een consistent helmontwerp.

Herinneringen per helm

Maar die regel is nu verdwenen en Norris is van plan om ten volle te profiteren door elk raceweekend met een ander design te komen. Norris zegt hierover: "Ik ben van plan en ga proberen om voor elke race een ander special ontwerp te maken. Ik heb ze nu allemaal aan mijn muur hangen. Het is iets waardoor ik elke race zal herinneren, er is altijd een bepaalde sfeer per helm."

"Nu we meer keuzevrijheid hebben qua helmdesigns kan ik wat meer overdreven designs laten maken, met meer kleur en dat soort dingen. Ik zal uiteraard nog steeds mijn standaard-design gebruiken, want dat hoort bij mij. Alles daar omheen, de kleuren en designs zal aangepast worden. Hopelijk kan ik dat aanpassen gericht op de Grand Prix en het land waar we op dat moment racen. Tot nu toe zijn de ontwerpen die ik heb gezien erg goed gelukt, ik ben er blij mee."

Kangoeroe helm

Norris besprak de helm die hij voor de Grand Prix van Australië had ontworpen en die de fans helaas nooit in actie hebben zien komen omdat de race werd afgelast. "Ik heb mezelf als kangoeroe aan de bovenkant met een beetje een zonsondergang op de achtergrond. Deze voor Melbourne had ik niet veel aangepast maar voor toekomstige races ga ik proberen meer te mengen."

Bevriend met Max Verstappen

De jonge Brit is goed bevriend met Max Verstappen en ze rijden dan ook regelmatig samen of tegen elkaar tijdens simrace wedstrijden.

  Persoonlijk ben ik ook meer voor een steady helmdesign... Maar ik kan ook wel weer genieten van bijvoorbeeld Valentino Rossi die elk weekend een andere helm neemt, die door bepaalde kenmerken toch weer resulteren naar een echte Rossi helm. Maar als iedereen continu veranderd is dat ook niet meer speciaal.

Wat is dat toch voor onzin om elke race je helm te willen veranderen. Een verandering moet speciaal zijn. Ik zou als coureur een keer of 2 per jaar een speciaal edition maken en voor de rest gewoon met dezelfde helm. Of 3 helm designs en die dan het hele jaar afwisselen. Maar dat ben ik
