Daniil Kvyat onder druk: "Daar ben ik inmiddels aan gewend"

Scuderia Alpha Tauri-coureur Daniil Kvyat staat onder druk. Niet zozeer omdat de prestaties tegenvallen - dat kan immers niet omdat het racen stilligt - maar vanwege zijn leeftijd en zijn positie binnen het Formule 1-programma van Red Bull. De Rus debuteerde in 2014 in de koningsklasse van de autosport, maar zes jaar later zit hij nog altijd bij het opleidingsteam van Red Bull.

Althans, nog altijd is geen juiste omschrijving. Kvyat kreeg namelijk na zijn debuutseizoen gelijk de kans bij hoofdmacht Red Bull Racing, maar na dik een jaar raakte hij dat stoeltje kwijt aan Max Verstappen. En in 2018 zat de Rus noodgedwongen aan de zijlijn omdat er geen plek voor hem was bij beide Red Bull-teams. Kortom, hij keerde al twee keer terug naar Scuderia Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri.

Kvyat is inmiddels 26 jaar en begint in 2020 aan zijn vierde volledige seizoen bij het opleidingsteam van Red Bull. Weinigen voor hem kregen zoveel kansen om zich te bewijzen. Zelf staat hij er niet bij stil of dit het jaar van de waarheid wordt. Dwingt Kvyat weer promotie naar een beter team af of is het Formule 1-avontuur na dit seizoen voorbij voor hem? "We kunnen er eindeloos over speculeren, maar ik ga gewoon mijn best doen voor Alpha Tauri", vertelde hij aan Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Natuurlijk wil iedere coureur in de beste auto rijden, maar de puzzelstukjes moeten allemaal op hun plaats vallen. Er staat sinds het begin in het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull al druk op, daar ben ik inmiddels wel aan gewend. Je doet het goed of je bent kansloos. Dat brengt je soms aan het twijfelen, maar het hoort er gewoon bij. Ik ben blij dat ik onderdeel uit mag maken van het team. En ik weet dat ik enorm gegroeid ben als coureur sinds mijn debuut in 2014."

Je moet nou niet ineens gaan doen alsof Kvyat een slechte coureur is. Het is geen topper, net als dat Gasly geen topper is. Wat eerst een opleidingsteam voor nieuw talent was, is veranderd in een opvang team voor mislukte coureurs. Eeuwig jammer voor Scuderia Alpha Tauri.

  Coureurs als Buemi en Vergne waren ook niet slecht, maar ook geen wereldtop.
  
  Kvyat is dus zeker geen mislukte coureur, en is altijd nog een veel betere coureur dan meneer Stroll die alleen vanwege zijn papa rijdt. En ook gasten als Magnussen of Grosjean zijn echt niet beter dan Kvyat of Gasly.
  
  Het simpele probleem is dat de vijver een beetje op is momenteel. En wanneer je dan per se uit je eigen vijver wil blijven vissen is Kvyat en Gasly een prima duo voor een team in de middenmoot. Het is overigens ook niet alsof je op 26-jarige leeftijd totaal aftakelt ofzo.
  
  Tot slot zou ik een coureur die podiumplekken heeft weten te pakken (3 stuks voor Kvyat volgens mij) geen mislukte coureur willen noemen. Als je Kvyat namelijk al mislukt vindt, wat vind je dan van Hulkenberg met 0 podiums? Ik bedoel maar... dan is het halve veld in 1x mislukt...

  Kvyat wordt hier als een soort mislukking neergezet, met zijn "inmiddels" 26 jaar. Volgens mij debuteerde Stoffel op zijn 25ste, en bovendien is AT geen opleidingsteam meer. Daarbij, waarom staat Gasly dan niet onder druk? Heeft die nog kans om naar RB te gaan? Nee. Dus dan rijdt hij ook mee als veldvulling. Aangezien er nog geen race gereden is, is het dan behoorlijk zinloos om nu Kvyat af te branden en zeggen dat hij onder druk staat.

26 jaar is tegenwoordig al oud voor een F1 coureur? Er zijn zat coureurs die hun debuut nog veel later maakten en toch succes boekten. Damon Hill reed pas vanaf zijn 31e in de Formule 1. Toch geen pannenkoek. Laten we nou niet overdrijven door te stellen dat iemand van 26 totaal kansloos is voor een goede toekomst in de F1.
