Esteban Ocon maakt zijn opwachting in virtuele Grand Prix

Esteban Ocon debuteert dit weekend in de virtuele Grand Prix-serie die ter vervanging dient voor de echte races die vanwege de corona-uitbraak niet door kunnen gaan. Renault heeft bevestigd dat de Fransman zondag voor het eerst zijn opwachting maakt in een officiële online Formule 1-race. Dan staat de virtuele Grand Prix van Monaco op het programma.

Ocon voegt zich bij het vaste clubje Formule 1-coureurs dat deelneemt aan de simraces; Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon, George Russell, Nicholas Latifi, Antonio Giovinazzi en Lando Norris. Laatstgenoemde krijgt in Monaco een bijzondere teamgenoot. Niemand minder dan Arsenal-spits Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doet namens McLaren mee aan de virtuele race door de straten van het prinsdom.

Nu de start van het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 nog op zich laat wachten, gaat de virtuele Grand Prix-serie in elk geval door tot eind juni. Dat betekent dat de liefhebbers van simraces zich sowieso nog kunnen verheugen op drie online wedstrijden; Azerbeidzjan, Canada en Frankrijk.

Mij verbaast vooral dat Norris hier aan mee doet. Die is gewoon 1 van de toppers in het echte sim racen. Ik moet zeggen.... dat schijnt hij te zijn als ik de berichtgeving volg. iRacen volg ik niet, maar als f1 fan zie je vanzelf de headlines.
Vraag me oprecht af waarom hij meedoet. Moet hij? Bijvoorbeeld van McLaren? Of doet hij het buur voor de lol? Dat laatste zou iets kunnen zeggen over zijn ambitie.
Wat denken jullie?

  Het verbaast mij dat hij het blijft proberen terwijl hij volgens mij nog geen race echt heeft kunnen meedoen vanwege technische problemen(die hij bij andere sims niet heeft)
