Max Verstappen: "Geen nadeel dat ik niet kan testen"

Over drie weken vindt de eerste race van het F1-seizoen 2020 plaats. Ter voorbereiding was het Mercedes dat als eerste op het circuit weer ging testen. Met een 2 jaar oude F1-wagen was het team afgelopen dinsdag en woensdag aanwezig op Silverstone waar het Hamilton en Bottas een goed gevoel wilde geven. Daarnaast was het de bedoeling bekend te raken met de procedures die gelden op het circuit en in de pitbox vanwege het coronavirus.

Ook Ferrari zal voor Oostenrijk gaan testen op haar eigen circuit Fiorano en Racing Point test volgende week tijdens een filmdag op Silverstone. Red Bull Racing zal niet naar het circuit gaan om te testen. Volgens de berichten heeft Renault niet genoeg onderdelen voor de motor van twee jaar geleden, iets wat ook geldt voor Honda die daardoor McLaren niet kan voorzien.

Oefenen met Jos Verstappen

De 22-jarige Nederlander ziet het niet als een nadeel dat hij met zijn team niet kan testen. Sterker nog, Verstappen geeft aan dat hij zelf ervoor kiest om niet te testen, zo zegt hij in gesprek met Sky Duitsland: "Je moet een oude auto gebruiken met banden die niet hetzelfde zijn, dus ik besloot het niet te doen. Ik denk drie of vier ronden in Spielberg nodig en dan ben ik weer terug op snelheid. Het duurt niet lang voordat ik weer het gevoel krijg, omdat ik veel met mijn vader heb geoefend om zo snel mogelijk weer op de limiet te komen. Tot dusver heeft dat altijd goed gewerkt."

Het is niet duidelijk of Verstappen met die laatste opmerking het over een recente situatie heeft of over vroeger. Toen Max in de karting reed oefende hij vaak met vader Jos om direct binnen enkele ronden op de limiet te rijden.

Beter in vorm

De Nederlander geeft toe dat de lange pauze door het coronavirus saai was, maar hij bracht veel tijd door in zijn simulator in Monaco en werkte samen met zijn nieuwe personal trainer.

"Ik heb misschien zelfs beter getraind dan voorheen, omdat we gewoon meer tijd hadden. Ik denk dat mijn vorm beter is dan in Australië."

  Het team kan ook op de fabriek heel veel testen en trainen.
  Pitstops kunnen met een mock-up auto worden gedaan, De pitbox zelf kan in de fabriek opgebouwd/neergezet worden om zo de protocollen te oefenen en daarop te trainen.
  Dat hoeft allemaal niet op een circuit te gebeuren. Het kan wel en het heeft wel nut (want een auto op snelheid aan laten komen voor een pitstop is toch wat anders dan een handgeduwde auto op je af laten komen), maar het hoeft niet....

  Nee, het gaat erom dat ze in een auto trainen van 2018 of ouder. En dan heeft ook TR een issue met de Renault motor. Dus gewoon heel veel rondes rijden in VT1, VT2 en VT3. Stof eraf blazen, roest eraf poetsen :-)

  @Snork zou niet weten waarom TR ook een issue zou moeten hebben met de renault motor aangezien er in 2018 al een honda motor achterin lag.

Onzin dat "testen" met een oude auto en banden van steen. Halverwege de eerste vrije training zitten ze straks allemaal weer op hun niveau. En de engineers weten echt wel waar ze wel en niet kunnen lopen. Die hebben namelijk de intelligentie om dat op te pikken vanaf een PP presentatie. Hoef je geen schoolreisje naar Silverstone voor te maken.

Iedereen heeft dit “probleem”. De rijkere teams gaan gewoon door met de simulaties en bank testen.

De productie in de fabrieken is wat lager geweest, maar alle ontwikkeling is gewoon doorgegaan. (Misschien bij de italiaanse teams ietsjes minder).
