Max Verstappen: "Liever wereldkampioen dan hattrick in Oostenrijk"

Max Verstappen staat aan de vooravond van een bijzonder weekend. De Nederlander kan opnieuw geschiedenis schrijven tijdens het eerste Grand Prix-weekend van 2020 in Oostenrijk. In zowel 2018 als 2019 won de Nederlander en als hij komend weekend weer weet te winnen dan is hij de eerste coureur ooit die een hattrick weet te scoren. Alain Prost won ook drie keer de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix, maar deed hier 4 jaar over.

Updates voor Max Verstappen

In de vooruitblik van Red Bull Racing zegt Max Verstappen dat hij uitkijkt naar komend weekend maar tegenstand verwacht van Mercedes.

De Nederlander zegt over zijn wagen, de RB16: "Het is lang geleden dat ik met de RB16 reed. Op dat moment voelde het goed, maar er is altijd ruimte voor verbetering, ik wil het altijd beter doen. Het team heeft hard gewerkt in de aanloop naar de race en er zullen upgrades voor onze auto zijn, maar alle teams zullen die hebben, dus het is niet duidelijk waar iedereen zich op dit moment bevindt."

"Ook de weersomstandigheden in Oostenrijk kunnen snel veranderen waardoor dat een rol gaat spelen in de resultaten. Ik zal me gewoon concentreren op wat er op het circuit gebeurt en ervoor zorgen dat we de beste prestaties uit de auto halen."

Hattrick in Oostenrijk

Zoals gezegd kan Verstappen geschiedenis schrijven, maar ook hierop heeft de Nederlander een duidelijke reactie: "Ik win liever een kampioenschap! Ik denk niet echt aan een hattrick, het belangrijkste voor mij is om een competitieve auto te hebben en op mijn best te presteren."

"Ik beschouw mezelf nooit als favoriet, want als je naar de baan kijkt, is het niet eens ons beste circuit, maar vorig jaar was het natuurlijk erg warm. We waren erg goed in het afkoelen van de motor. Dus ik verwacht niet dat het een gemakkelijke overwinning zal zijn, ik denk dat Mercedes opnieuw erg sterk zal zijn. We moeten ook afwachten waar Ferrari zal staan, dus nee, het zal weer een heel harde en zware strijd worden om die race te winnen, maar we gaan het proberen."

Het blijft in ieder geval droog dit weekend. Daar ben ik wel blij mee. Natte omstandigheden zijn leuk, maar nu wil je toch eerst de krachtverhoudingen op een droge baan zien.

  De vrijdag valt trouwens volledig in het water. Dat betekent dus maar 1 uur aan droge training na zo lang niet gereden te hebben. Dan moet alles kloppen voor een goede qualirun en racerun, zeker gezien alles wat langer duurt door de nieuwe procedures. Dus het zou goed kunnen dat we pas in de tweede race de echte potentie van de auto zien.
