Toto Wolff: "Nyck de Vries was een optie voor Racing Point"

Racing Point kwam gisteravond voor een zware maar snelle opdracht te staan. Sergio Perez bleek besmet met corona en kan daardoor niet deelnemen aan de Britse Grand Prix. Het team van Lawrence Stroll moest met minder dan 24 uur te gaan tot de eerste vrije training een vervanger zien te vinden.

Stoffel Vandoorne viel af vanwege zijn activiteiten in de Formule E in Berlijn, terwijl ook Esteban Gutierrez een optie was. Beide coureurs zijn reservecoureur van Mercedes. Wie ook onder contract bij Mercedes staat is Nyck de Vries. Volgens Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff was ook hij een optie om Perez te vervangen.

Tegen Sky Sports vertelde Wolff: "Ze hebben gekeken naar onze opties, maar Stoffel Vandoorne en Nyck de Vries zitten in de Formule E en dus kunnen we dat nu niet mogelijk maken."

Esteban Gutierrez werd niet benoemd door Wolff maar hij test veel in de simulator van het Duitse team. Gutierrez was echter geen serieuze optie omdat hij al jaren niet in een recente F1-wagen heeft gereden. De voorkeur van Racing Point ging dus uit naar Nico Hulkenberg die alsnog kans heeft om een podium te scoren in de F1.

      Het artikel is waarschijnlijk ook foutief geconstrueerd.
      Esteban Gutierrez werd door Toto niet genoemd, staat in het artikel.
      De mogelijkheid bestaat dat het interview verkeerd aan elkaar geplakt is tijdens het schrijven van het stukje.
      Dan kom je zulke fouten tegen.

    Wat ik begreep was dat ze moeten opgeven wie de reserve coureurs zijn? Dan vraag ik me af:

    1. Waarom geef je Gutierrez op als hij geen superlicentie heeft en je toch niet van plan bent hem te gebruiken.
    2. Waarom je nog wat op dient te geven als het schijnbaar niet heel lastig is om een andere coureur te plaatsen.

    Verder ben ik blij dat Hulk rijdt. Zeer jammer dat hij geen stoeltje had dit jaar.

      Ik gok erop dat ze er vanuit gaan dat de FIA in deze bijzondere omstandigheden die superlicentie gewoon afgeven, mede vanwege zijn F1 ervaring uit het verleden...
