Max Verstappen sluit overwinning in Italië uit

Zondag winnen wordt "onmogelijk", zegt Max Verstappen in Monza tijdens de Italiaanse Grand Prix.

"We verliezen op al die rechte stukken veel terrein, maar we zullen zien", zei de Nederlander.

Red Bull was hoopvol gestemd dat de motorinstelling na het verbod op de 'feestmodus' hen dichter bij Mercedes zou helpen, maar daar blijkt nog weinig van op het Italiaanse asfalt.

Red Bull worstelt verrassend ook op de zachte band van Pirelli, vertelt Helmut Marko tegen motorsport-magazine.com.

"Die band is een echte ramp voor onze auto hier. Het is een mysterie",

Ondertussen zijn de Renaults en ook de McLarens steeds geduchtere concurrent voor Red Bull

"Hoe hard wil je dat ik in dit antwoord ben?" zeegt Renault-baas Cyril Abiteboul als hem wordt gevraagd naar de worstelingen van Red Bull om dichterbij de Mercedes te komen.

Hij had gewild dat Red Bull en Renault nog "één team met één mentaliteit" waren, en geeft toe dat de twee partijen "gefaald hebben dat te bereiken".

"Het ziet er naar uit dat ze het niet veel beter af zijn nu ze rijden met de motor van Honda", zegt Abiteboul.

"Het toont gewoon de mate van complexiteit en perfectie die nodig zijn om in de F1 te kunnen winnen en vooral Mercedes te kunnen verslaan."

Ondertussen zegt Verstappen dat hij niet gefrustreerd is dat zijn droom - om met Red Bull de jongste wereldkampioen ooit te worden - nog erg onwaarschijnlijk lijkt.

Teambaas Christian Horner zegt dat de Nederlander volwassen is geworden.

"Ik was het meest onder de indruk toen ik zag hoe hij zijn teamgenoot in moeilijke tijden ondersteunde", zei hij, verwijzend naar de worstelende Alex Albon.

"Na zijn kwalificatie op Silverstone bleef Max Alex helpen met zijn sponsorverplichtingen, waarvan hij wist dat Alex daar helemaal geen zin in had. Daarom bood hij aan om het samen te doen."

"Gezien het feit dat Max een hekel heeft aan dat soort dingen, toont dit dus wel zijn geweldige karakter en menselijkheid", voegde Horner eraan toe.

"Max is net volwassen geworden. Hij wordt binnenkort 23 en heeft gewoon meer ervaring - ook in het leven - en hij voelt zich erg goed met zichzelf. Hij is goed in het team, zelfverzekerd en dat is te zien aan zijn karakter."

Ook een volwassen antwoord van Abiteboul. Eerlijk is eerlijk. De Renault lijkt goed te gaan hier. Ik gun het Ricciardo van harte als hij het podium bereikt.

  Ik denk wel dat de Red Bull het eerder is aan te rekenen dan de Honda. Op de limiet is het gewoon geen goede auto.
  
  Wat ik veel erger vind is dat duidelijk uitkomt wat ik al dacht. Die Mercedesen hebben meer voordeel er aan dat de kwalificatie mode weg is.
