Racing Point als een duveltje uit een doosje: "Gaan voor podium"

De Racing Point van Segio Perez vertrekt vanaf de tweede startrij. Achter het stuur van de roze auto zit dan een opgetogen Mexicaan, breed glimlachend. Sergio Perez start de Grand Prix van Italië vanaf P4.

Nooit eerder startte Perez in Italië zó ver vooraan een Formule 1-race. Terwijl het team dit weekend verstopt leek, kwam het tijdens de kwalificatie als een duveltje uit een doosje tevoorschijn.

Verrassing

"Wij zijn ook verrast. We hadden helemaal niet verwacht deze stap te maken in de kwalificatie. Alles wat wij gedaan hebben is ons focussen op de race, dus we zouden morgen een goede snelheid in de race moeten hebben. "

Het team had juist verwacht minder voor de dag te komen, omdat hun auto minder uit de roze verf leek te komen op circuits waar het minder op neerwaartse druk aankomt.

Grote kans om te knokken voor podium

"We waren niet erg sterk tot nu toe dit weekend, dus het team heeft geweldig werk geleverd. Ik denk dat we nu zeker grote kans kunnen maken op het podium te komen.

Zijn teamgenoot Lance Stroll is minder blij: hij wist slechts de achtste startplaats te veroveren.

Stroll: "Het was niet te best. Er is absoluut een aantal posities verloren gegaan vandaag, dus daar ben ik gefrustreerd over."

Als hem wordt gevraagd waar het dan mis ging, zegt hij:
"We kregen gewoon niet alle eindjes aan elkaar geknoopt, (ik heb) fouten gemaakt. Het was geen goede kwalificatie voor ons."

Geen 'tow'

Sergio Perez zegt zijn snelle ronde te hebben gereden zonder een 'tow' van een voorganger, waardoor hij nog sneller had kunnen zijn.

Het geeft hem al met al vertrouwen genoeg om zichzelf op het podium te zien eindigen. "We staan er goed bij en we zouden morgen snel moeten zijn. Het wordt een lange en warme race, maar wij staan er goed voor."

Als alles een beetje normaal verloopt verwacht ik dat Max P3 pakt naast de 2 Mercedes rijders... Ik verwacht meer van de racepace van RB dan de McLaren en de RP.
