Mark Hughes waarschuwt Red Bull: "Renault gaat dit jaar meer podiumplaatsen pakken"

Renault doet dit jaar goede zaken om zich toe te voegen met de top teams. Met Fernando Alonso en Esteban Ocon hoopt het team volgend jaar nog dichterbij te zitten. Dit jaar moet Daniel Ricciardo het doen voor het team, wat goed gaat.

De Australiër, die volgend seizoen vertrekt naar het sterke McLaren, pakte zijn eerste podium met Renault. Hieraan is te zien volgens Mark Hughes dat het team aardige stappen vooruit weet te maken. Sinds 2011 wist het team geen enkele podiumplek meer te bemachtigen. Volgens de verslaggever van Sky Sports kunnen we meer van de Franse renstal gaan verwachten dit seizoen en volgend seizoen.

“Toen Renault aan het begin van het seizoen zich in het midden van de grid kwalificeerde, met slechts één auto in Q3, was het niet de start waarop het team gehoopt had. Ondanks een hele reeks upgrades suggereerde het dat Renault achter de topteams terecht zou komen”, zo begint hij in een verslag op Sky Sports.

Hughes meent dat het allemaal op Spa begon. “Maar in Spa, op een circuit dat een lage luchtweerstand beloont, stond de Renault absoluut aan het hoofd van zijn klasse. Ricciardo deed de rest. Hij kwalificeerde zich als vierde, achter de twee Mercedes-auto's en Max Verstappen.” Hij kon achter niet naar voren kruipen. De Mercedessen en Verstappen waren te snel. Genoegen nam hij toen ook met een vierde plek.

Renault op jacht naar Red Bull Racing

Tijdens de Grand Prix van Rusland nam Renault een nieuwe upgrade mee en dit werkte. De Franse formatie kon weer achter Red Bull Racing en de Mercedessen kwalificeren. “Dit suggereerde dat de auto niet langer vertrouwde op circuits met een lage downforce om competitief te zijn. Sinds de upgrade presteert de auto ook goed op circuits met gemiddelde neerwaartse druk. Het is dan ook realistisch om te geloven dat er nog meer podiumplaatsen wachten. Dat plaatst het team op een betere plek dan aan het begin van het jaar leek.”

Ik voorspel dat zondag beide Renaults tijdens de race door Max een rondje worden gelapt, in het geval er geen SC is.

  Precies. Dit is grootspraak eerste klasse. Renault rijdt een seconde per rondje langzamer dan Max in de RB16. Gewoon hard feit. Dus dat podium is alleen in zicht als in de top 3 iets fout gaat.

Gelukkig doet ferrari niet meer mee voor plek 1 tot 6 en bestaat er geen gat naar RB van 1 seconden op racepace.
Ik denk dat renault nog wel gaat winnen als de beide mercedessen en max uitvallen...oh en als racing point van het gas af gaat en sainz een paaltje mis en ricciardo zn motor heel blijft....

Renault zal alleen een podium kunnen scoren als er iets mis gaat bij Mercedes en Verstappen.. Ik denk dat hier bedoelt wordt dat Renault nu structureel de 2e auto van Red Bull zou kunnen gaan verslaan.. Dat is inderdaad een probleem dat Red Bull zal moeten oplossen als ze ook voor het contructeurskampioenschap mee willen gaan doen t.o.v. Mercedes.. Renault is geen bedreiging voor Red Bull in dat kampioenschap zolang Max er ver voor rijdt..
