van der Merwe - medical car rijder: "Dit hebben we nog nooit gezien"

In bocht drie van de eerste ronde van de Grand Prix van Bahrein maakte Romain Grosjean een horror-crash mee. De Fransman raakte de vangrail met een hoek waardoor de VF-20 dwars door de vangrail schoot. Een grote vuurzee was het gevolg. 

Alan van der Merwe, rijder van de medische auto, zei daarover het volgende. "Dit was echt een grote verrassing voor ons", zo vertelt van der Merwe. "We hebben nog nooit zoveel vuur gezien. We moesten enigszins onze tijd nemen om alles goed te verwerken en kijken wat het beste was om te doen, waardoor Romain redelijk lang in het vuur zou zitten", zo vertelt Romain. "We voelden ons pas opgelucht toen we terugkwamen in de paddock en hoorden dat hij oké was."

Dr. Ian Robert was degene die Romain uit de auto heeft geholpen. Later hoorde we ook teambaas Günther Steiner van der Merwe bedanken: "Bedankt, echt. Ik was verbaasd hoe verschrikkelijk snel jullie konden reageren", aldus de Haas-teambaas.

Elke keer als de Halo beschadigd raakt roept men keihard dat hij een leven heeft gered, wat natuurlijk onzin is.
Bij deze crash echter ben ik daar nog het meest van overtuigd dat hij Grosjean letterlijk zn hoofd heeft gered.

    Echte horror crash...
    Romain had zich zijn afscheidsrace toch anders en op een ander moment voorgesteld denk ik maar met deze uitkomst kan hij alleen maar dankbaar zijn.

    Toch heeft Grosjean zichzelf weten te bevrijden, dat heeft hij alleen aan zichzelf te danken. Het is niet zo dat iemand de vlammen induikte en Grosjean uit de auto sleurt zoals men ooit deed bij Lauda en Peterson.
    Fire Marshalls deden het goed maar je zag dat het gewoon bleef fikken ondanks hevig bluswerk.

    Sprakeloos was ik, bizar gewoon. Hoe dat cockpit in de vangrail zat, hij heeft geluk gehad dat de vangrail niet over de Halo zet.
    Want men zegt nu wel dat de Halo hem gered heeft, maar het ook zij einde kunnen zijn.
    Maar ik werd kwaad toen ik de marshals zag blunderen en zeker die met die gele helm, die andere moest ook geholpen door het medical team met de brandblusser. Maar die met de gele helm begon meters van de voren te spuiten en deed veel te weinig, wat een de dwaas.
    De helden zijn het medical team en niet de marshals in mij ogen.

    En dan te bedenken dat die Alan van der Merwe ooit zelf er bijna niet meer was geweest. Ik herinner me een crash van hem in Superleague Formula op Brands Hatch waarbij hij gelanceerd werd en met zijn auto deels tegen die brug klapte boven dat bergafwaartse rechte stuk. Zou hij nu daarom deze baan hebben, omdat ie weet wat het betekent om zo afhankelijk te zijn van medische steun op een circuit?

    Ja, en OOK het geluk dat Romain niet knock-out ging zeg. Of je zou maar in het vuur jezelf niet los kunnen krijgen(paniek). Inderdaad zonder die Halo, poeh. Ook dat de auto nu als een pijl doorboorde.

    Ik vermoed wel dat ze deze drie-splijtende vangrails, wel even goed moeten gaan onderzoeken. Was het halverwege Halo opening gestopt, dan was Romain er ook niet uitgekomen.
