Haas wil dat Grosjean komend weekend racet: "Als hij het psychisch aan durft"

Het lijkt te bizar voor woorden maar Haas heeft 'Plan A' uit de kast getrokken voor het tweede Grand Prix-weekend in Bahrein, en dat houdt in dat Romain Grosjean komend weekend weer in actie zou komen.

De Franse coureur, wiens vizier smolt in het inferno van zijn crash in de eerste ronde, liep alleen tweedegraads brandwonden op aan zijn handen en enkels, tijdens de enorme crash die veranderde in een vuurbal en explosie in de derde bocht op het circuit in Sakhir.

Vrijwel onmiddellijk waren er geruchten Mick Schumacher de kans zou krijgen om Grosjean te vervangen, aangezien hij in 2021 zo goed als zeker de vervanger is van Grosjean bij het team, ook al is het officieel nog niet bekend gemaakt. Zijn drang naar de Formule 2-titel zal dat waarschijnlijk echter uitsluiten.

Teambaas Gunther Steiner hoopt dat Grosjean dit weekend kan rijden. Tegenover de pers, waaronder GPToday.net, zei hij in Bahrein: "Op dit moment is mijn plan, als hij oké is, dat hij hier komend weekend gewoon zal rijden, maar voordat we speculeren, wil ik eerst Romain spreken. Ik heb hem alleen aan de telefoon gesproken en zal spoedig naar het ziekenhuis gaan om te kijken hoe het echt met hem is."

Psychologisch in orde

Steiner zei dat het een belangrijke voorwaarde is dat, als Grosjean lichamelijk in orde is, de 34-jarige getrouwde vader zich ook psychologisch klaar voelt om terug te keren naar de auto.

"Dat is zijn beslissing, ik ga hem niet vertellen wat hij moet doen. Dat moet hij zelf beslissen, maar hij was al in een goed humeur en maakte een paar grappen."

Steiner verwierp ook de suggestie dat, omdat de auto van Grosjean volledig was verwoest en de FIA een dringend onderzoek heeft gestart, Haas dit weekend misschien helemaal geen tweede auto kan besturen. "Zelfs als ons budget klein is, hebben we genoeg onderdelen om vanaf nul een tweede auto te bouwen", zei hij.

Aangenomen wordt dat de FIA het wrak in detail zal inspecteren, waarbij Steiner uitlegt: "Maar er is geen haast omdat we niets meer van die auto kunnen gebruiken."

Als je van het paard valt (en je hebt niks gebroken buiten je ego) dan moet je inderdaad zsm weer opstappen. Als ik echter naar die ingepakte klauwen van Romain kijk denk ik niet dat het veilig is om over 4 dagen alweer te gaan racen.

Hoe sneller hij weer instapt hoe beter. Ik heb een paar heel zware ongelukken gehad en ben zodra het ging weer in de auto en op de motor gestapt. Vrienden van mij deden dat niet en bet heeft lang geduurd voor ze weer durfden. Lichamelijk in orde zijn is een, maar er zit zeker een psychologische kant aan. Nu zal het voor een coureur misschien iets anders zijn, omdat het zijn beroep. Maar als puntje bij paaltje komt, dan moet je even die knop omzetten.

  Dat klopt. Ik ben wel eens over de kop geslagen met een nieuwe auto en direct total loss....
  
  Ik stikte van de adrenaline en gelukkig had ik binnen 2 uur een vervangende auto. Direct ingestapt. Later schoot ik wel in de stress. Was volgens mij goed dat ik direct weer instapte.

  Blaaskaak Coronel heeft echter wél gelijk.
  Het waren de tear-off's die zijn gesmolten.
  Het visier moet volgens de eisen minimaal 2 minuten tegen een vlammenzee bestand zijn, dat is nog langer dan de brandvrije overall.
  (Ik kan even de feitelijke eisen niet vinden dus ik kan er met de exacte tijd naast zitten)
