Ricciardo leert van jonge generatie en ziet gelijkenissen tussen Verstappen en Ocon

De goedlachse Daniel Ricciardo is al bijna tien jaar actief in de hoogste autosportklasse. De 31-jarige coureur uit Perth heeft in zijn F1- carrière veel jonge gasten naast hem gehad, waaronder natuurlijk Max Verstappen. De kersverse aanwinst van McLaren stelt dat de nieuwe generatie hem scherp en bij de les houdt.

Het afgelopen seizoen werkte de Australiër met de 24-jarige Estefan Ocon samen bij Renault. Daniel Ricciardo herkende bij de Fransman gelijkenissen met andere voormalige en jongere teamgenoten. "Het is een jonge, gretige kerel - een beetje vergelijkbaar met Max in dat opzicht." Voor de 31-jarige coureur is het werken met de nieuwe garde een mooie bijvangst. "Het is een voorrecht om van de jongere generatie te leren en ik wil begrijpen hoe ze in elkaar steekt."

De Australiër ziet naast zijn garage graag nieuwe gezichten en gaat met veel goede moed de strijd met ze aan. "Ik heb altijd met plezier uitgekeken naar een nieuwe teamgenoot. Het is natuurlijk jouw eerste rivaal, dat is geen geheim." Beginners willen dolgraag aan de stoelpoten van een gevestigde coureur zagen. Daniel Ricciardo beaamt dat. "Ze willen je dolgraag verslaan, omdat ze het tegen je opnemen in een eerlijke strijd.''

De meeste onderlinge duels met zijn jeugdige conculega's werden vaak in het voordeel van de 31-jarige Australier beslecht, maar de voormalig Red Bull Racing-coureur zag ook dat veel nieuwelingen snel aanhaakten. ''Tot nu heb ik aardig wat succes gehad, maar ik houd gewoon van de uitdaging.'' De enige keren dat Daniel Ricciardo in de eindstand het onderspit moest delven was tegen de talentvolle Nederlander en de Rus Daniil Kvyat. ''Ik denk dat jonge rijders snelle leermeesters zijn. Als ik voluit ga in een snelle bocht, dan doen ze precies hetzelfde in de sessie daarna of zelfs in de ronde daarna. Ik houd ervan als ze op mijn hielen zitten. Het dwingt mij om nog beter te worden.''

Volgend jaar bij McLaren is Daniel Ricciardo weer de meeste ervaren coureur van de twee met 188 Grands Prix-starts achter zijn naam. Opnieuw zal de geboren rijder uit Perth de uitdaging aangaan met een jongeling. In dit geval met de Brit Lando Norris.

Ik vind het altijd zo’n slap als coureurs hun teamgenoten op zitten te hemelen om er zo dan zelf beter uit te zien.

Het is nu eenmaal een vaststaand feit dat jonge gasten de gevaren wat minder hoog inschatten dan de wat oudere meer ervaren coureur. Door die ervaringen gaan de wat oudere coureurs er dan ook met de meeste en grootste prijzen vandoor, daar waar het voor de jonkies slechts dagsuccesjes zijn. Dat heeft natuurlijk ook nog wel eens met het beschikbare materiaal van doen maar dat terzijde. Die jonge gasten hebben echter nog wel eens een dipje in het begin van hun carrière, daar goed doorheen gekomen zijn het vaak de kampioenen van de toekomst, uitzonderingen daargelaten natuurlijk. <

  Niet mee eens, @Van Putten. De ervaren coureurs hebben zich in het verleden bewezen ( als vroegere lichting jonge honden) en beschikken over het beste materiaal. In een sport waarin circa 75% van de performance van de auto komt en de inbreng van de coureur op 25% gesteld wordt is dat verschil niet te overbruggen.

  Ja. Zo slap. Vettel is bij Ferrari genaaid imho. Maar als dank was het toch een geweldig team, en levlerc de beste teamgenoot ooit. Misschien wel de beste coureur. Je bruggen niet verbranden en tegelijkertijd jezelf oppoetsen. Bah bah bah.
