Lance Stroll lacht om Jacques Villeneuve: "Hij zal wel gelijk hebben"

Aston Martin-rijder Lance Stroll is de voorbije jaren geregeld het mikpunt van kritiek van oud-coureur Jacques Villeneuve geweest. De 22-jarige Canadees stond dan ook verbaasd te kijken toen Auto Hebdo hem confronteerde met een complimentje van zijn illustere landgenoot. Villeneuve had het optreden van Stroll in de kwalificatie in Turkije 'uitzonderlijk goed' genoemd.

Stroll kon er wel om lachen. "Heeft Jacques echt gezegd dat ik het goed heb gedaan? Dat wist ik niet. Nou, als Jacques daar zo over denkt, dan zal hij wel gelijk hebben en zal het wel zo zijn. Ik ben altijd van mening geweest dat er maar één manier is om op kritiek te reageren en dat is door critici de mond te snoeren door succesvol te zijn op de baan."

Rijkeluiszoontje

Hij moet zich al zijn hele loopbaan verzetten tegen het beeld van het rijkeluiszoontje dat zich met dank aan het geld van zijn schatrijke vader Lawrence Stroll heeft weten op te werken tot het hoogste niveau. Lance Stroll haalt zijn schouders op. "Dat soort opmerkingen heeft me nooit geraakt. Kritiek of niet, ik doe mijn werk gewoon op dezelfde manier."

Voor 2021 zwol de kritiek weer aan, toen Sergio Perez ondanks een veel betere score vorig seizoen moest wijken om ruimte te maken voor Sebastian Vettel en Lance Stroll mocht blijven zitten. "Ik heb nooit gedacht dat ik een plek bezet hou die eigenlijk voor iemand anders bestemd zou moeten zijn. Vorig jaar heb ik mijn ding gedaan. Als men tevreden is over hoe ik mijn werk doe, des te beter", aldus Stroll.

Verwachtingen

Vanaf dit jaar heet zijn werkgever Aston Martin F1 Team. Die naam gaat gepaard met verwachtingen, maar Stroll tempert die. "Dat we nu meer middelen tot onze beschikking krijgen en Aston Martin heten verandert niets aan het DNA van het team. We zullen niet opeens een topteam zijn dit jaar. Alle benodigde ingrediënten hebben is één ding, maar ze op de juiste manier toepassen is weer iets heel anders."

Stroll raakt evenmin in de war van de komst van Sebastian Vettel, waardoor hij nu een viervoudig wereldkampioen als teamgenoot heeft. "Sebastian is zeer ervaren en weet wat een team nodig heeft om succesvol te zijn. Maar persoonlijk verwacht ik niets speciaals. Ik richt me gewoon op mijn eigen taken."

Ook Stroll.
Enige is dat Stroll en Villeneuve landgenoten zijn... dus laat ze het maar lekker onderling uitvechten.

Off Topic: Ik lees net dat Striptekenaar Jean Graton is donderdag in Brussel op 97-jarige leeftijd overleden. Ik ben opgegroeid met Michel Vaillant en mede hierdoor is mijn interesse in de F1 gekomen. Ik heb ze hier nog allemaal staan, de laatste die ik kocht was de bluffer van Franchorchamps. Droevig nieuws in ieder geval.
