Helmut Marko kaatst de bal terug: "Toto probeert wrijving te creëren"

Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko is niet onder de indruk van de woorden van Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff. Volgens Wolff gaat Red Bull Racing het seizoen 2021 in als favoriet. Immers, de Oostenrijkse renstal won de laatste Grand Prix van 2020 en beschikt met Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez over een sterk rijdersduo. Wolff speelt Red Bull Racing de favorietenrol toe.

Marko kaatst de bal echter vrolijk terug en trapt niet in de psychologische spelletjes van de concurrent. Aan F1-Insider.com deelde hij mede: "Op dit moment is er nog geen meter gereden, dus Toto probeert alleen maar spanning en wrijving te creëren met zijn woorden. We hopen tot de voorhoede te behoren, maar Mercedes is de overduidelijke favoriet. Zij hebben sinds de start van het hybride-tijdperk in 2014 alle titels op hun naam geschreven."

Wolff trok zijn conclusies mede op basis van het feit dat de teams noodgedwongen de vloer aan de achterkant van de bolides hebben moeten aanpassen. Hij ziet dan ook kansen voor bijvoorbeeld Aston Martin om aan te haken bij de top. "Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Aston Martin een heel andere achterkant zal hebben dan Mercedes", zegt Marko daarover. "Het verleden heeft ons geleerd dat hun auto's veel op elkaar zullen lijken."

Tot slot ging Marko nog in op de twijfels van Wolff rondom het doorgaan van de Grand Prix van Portugal. Het circuit van Portimao vormt - als het goed is - op 2 mei weer het strijdtoneel voor een Formule 1-race. De Mercedes-teambaas verkondigde echter dat Portugal en Brazilië nog op een 'rode lijst' staan. Marko bestrijdt dat. "In tegenstelling tot andere berichten heb ik informatie ontvangen dat de Portugese Grand Prix gewoon door kan gaan."

Marko die bescheiden is? Ik weet het nu wel zeker. die RB heeft wat. hIj roept al jaren dat ze WK kunnen worden, Dit is het eerste jaar waarin ik hem een ander de favorietenrol zie toespelen.
