Norris: "We zijn vandaag snel maar Red Bull en Mercedes zijn morgen sneller"

McLaren stapte afgelopen winter over van Renault naar Mercedes-motoren. Dat legde het team uit Woking geen windeieren. De Britse renstal zorgde bovendien met een nieuwe diffuser ervoor dat tijdens de wintertest in Bahrein, 2 weken geleden, alle ogen op het team gericht waren.

Veel kenners van de technische kant genoemden de nieuwe diffuser als het grote wapen van de McLaren, maar men mag niet vergeten dat het over is gestapt op Mercedes-motoren.

Vandaag kwam tijdens de eerste en tweede vrije training de bevestiging dat die overstap de juiste keus was. Tijdens de eerste vrije training stond Lando Norris meteen in de top 3, waar Daniel Ricciardo nog aan het zoeken was naar de juiste snelheid. Tijdens de tweede training was het Norris die nipt achter Verstappen stond, op de tweede plaats. Ricciardo bezette weliswaar de zesde positie maar binnen 4 tienden van de Nederlander.

Achterste van de tong

Na afloop zei Norris dat het team verschillende dingen uitgeprobeerd heeft en te veel van zichzelf heeft laten zien. In gesprek met de media, waaronder GPToday.net, zei Norris: "Elke run die we vandaag hebben gedaan, proberen we iets anders uit aan de wagen. Het zijn dingen waar we aan werken om te kijken of het goed uitpakt. Soms is dat wel zo, een andere keer niet."

"We zien er vandaag snel uit, maar iedereen weet wat er morgen gaat gebeuren. Red Bull Racing en Mercedes zijn sneller dan wij, dus die zullen voor ons staan. Daarachter zal het erg dicht op elkaar zitten. Waarom we vandaag zo snel waren? Omdat we te veel van onszelf hebben laten zien."

Daarbij is McLaren erg blij met de prestaties van de motoren van Mercedes, aangezien er geen problemen zijn voorgevallen vandaag.

Als Mclaren op dit moment het 3e sterkste team blijkt te zijn, hebben ze ontzettend goed werk verricht daar in Ingland.

Terwijl mcLaren het vorig jaar niet slecht heeft gedaan, lijken ze dit jaar inderdaad dichterbij gekropen. Er wordt steeds gezegd dat de overstap naar Mercedesmotoren een sprong voorwaarts zou zijn, maar ben ik de enige die vindt dat de Renaultmotor helemaal niet zo echt was vorig jaar? Vond de beide Renault aangedreven teams juist op de powercircuits wel goed uit de verf komen.

Elke rijder weet nu al precies of ie nog genoeg over had, of dat ie aan zijn maximum zat.

Lando zat er top bij, maar in de longruns kwam Lando toch bijna een seconde tekort op Max en Lewis.

McLaren had ook de hoogste topsnelheid dus die reden de snelle ronde duidelijk met meer vermogen.
