Jos Verstappen optimistisch over kansen Red Bull: ''We doen mee om de overwinning''

Jos Verstappen keek met gemengde gevoelens terug op de tweede plaats van zijn zoon Max. De overwinning in Bahrein lag voor het grijpen, maar het was Mercedes met Lewis Hamilton die de Red Bull-coureur te slim af was.

Toch heerst er bij Verstappen senior optimisme na de overtuigende pole en race pace. ''Het goede van dit jaar is dat we gewoon weten: de volgende race doen we weer mee met de overwinning. En dat hebben we de jaren daarvoor niet gehad'', zei de Nederlander in het programma Formule 1 Café op Ziggo Sport.

Red Bull kwam de afgelopen jaren moeizaam uit de startblokken en moest elke keer het gat naar Mercedes overbruggen. Aan het einde van het seizoen had de Oostenrijkse formatie de aansluiting gevonden, maar het jaar daarop begon hetzelfde riedeltje opnieuw. Nu is dat anders en Jos onderstreepte dat in de talkshow. ''Ik heb dit nog nooit meegemaakt bij Red Bull."

Het blijft afwachten of Red Bull het Mercedes-team kan blijven uitdagen, maar Jos maakt daar vooralsnog geen zorgen over. ''Wij slapen ook niet, zijn ook wakker. Ik weet wat er nog aankomt en wij zijn er klaar voor. Dus het wordt gigantisch spannend.”

    Het schijnt dat Mercedes het dit jaar expres rustig aan doet om een switch van Hamilton naar Verstappen te kunnen rechtvaardigen...

      Dat is dan niet slim van Merc, als RBR sterker is dan Merc, dan gaat Verstappen juist niet (O)Verstappen. Broodje aap verhaal dus

    Zo optimistisch heb ik Jos nog nooit horen praten. "Ik weet wat er nog aankomt."
    Zou het dan eindelijk ......?

    Op AMuS was trouwens het volgende te lezen (vertaling):

    Hoe lang duurt het voordat Mercedes Red Bull heeft ingehaald op het gebied van snelheid? Volgens de ingenieurs van Mercedes duurt het minstens een maand. Dan komt de eerste upgrade. Een directe vergelijking met Red Bull zal uitwijzen of het de enige upgrade voor 2021 zal zijn.

    Ik begrijp het totaal niet dat de RB strategen dachten dat Lewis nog wel een 3e keer zou gaan stoppen.
    Met dit scenario heb ik nooit rekening gehouden, temeer omdat Hamilton sowieso bijna altijd goed is met zijn banden.

      Nou ja, met Bottas hadden ze niets meer te verliezen door hem binnen te laten komen voor dat puntje snelste ronde. Zijn strategie is wel geslaagd ;)

      Uiteindelijk was Max voorbij Hamilton, maar de Fia ging zich er ineens weer mee bemoeien, zonder Fia had Max gewoon gewonnen, dus strategie was goed.

    Wat mij nog het meeste opviel was nog wel dat Jos zowaar antwoord gaf aan Rob Kamphues. Tot vorig jaar beantwoordde hij niet eens een vraag van hem als Jos verbinding had met de studio. Dus dan zal Jos wel héél tevreden zijn met hoe het er bij red bull aan toe gaat.
