Quebec optimistisch dat Canadese Grand Prix toch door kan gaan

De provincie Quebec is hoopvol gestemd dat de Grand Prix van Canada dit jaar toch door kan gaan. Dat liet Pierre Fitzgibbon, minister van Economische Zaken in Quebec, weten. Hij is optimistisch dat er toch nog een akkoord met de Formule 1 en de lokale autoriteiten gesloten kan worden om de race op het Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal plaats te laten vinden op 13 juni.

Het gonst al geruime tijd van de geruchten dat afgelasting van de Canadese Grand Prix kwestie van tijd is. De verwachting is dat daar deze week meer duidelijk over wordt. Ook Fitzgibbon heeft het in zijn uitlatingen over deze week, maar hij neigt eerder naar goed nieuws.

"We voeren gesprekken met de mensen van de Formule 1 en ik denk dat we later deze week iets naar buiten kunnen brengen. Ik ben optimistisch. We zijn nog in onderhandeling, maar ik ben van nature een optimist", aldus Fitzgibbon. Economische factoren en de volksgezondheid spelen een belangrijke rol in de afweging om de Grand Prix wel of niet door te laten gaan.

De Grand Prix van Canada is een belangrijk evenement voor de regio en voor het land. De gezondheidsdienst zou bereid zijn het sein op groen te zetten voor een Formule 1-weekend zonder publiek, alleen dan verlangt de organisatie wel extra compensatie vanuit de overheid om de kosten te dekken. De vraag is alleen wat een spookrace Quebec en Montreal economisch gezien oplevert.

Ik zou het vooral voor Lance erg leuk vinden als de GP daar door zou gaan.
Lance wordt in Canada toch als de nieuwe Senna gezien mede door zijn sterke optredens in natte condities.

Hmmm, op het Franse La Presse is vandaag te lezen (vertaald):

"De Formule 1 Grand Prix van Canada wordt dit jaar om gezondheidsredenen afgelast. De regeringen en de F1 hebben echter een principeakkoord bereikt om het evenement in Montreal met nog eens twee jaar te verlengen, tot 2031, heeft La Presse vernomen. De officiële aankondiging vindt deze week plaats.

  Ik lees inderdaad op verschillende andere sites dat de GP van Canada afgelast is en dat Turkije er voor in de plaats komt.
